Pic's request for Bell Housing grounds

My N/A only has one ground running from the back of the head to chassis, what are the grounds for the bell housing i keep on hearing about?

Hi Levi,

In the picture, the thick negative ground should attach to the threaded post above the TDC inspection hole on the bell housing.

If the PO only has a short cable from the negative battey post to the chassis, you need to get a new cable. This is not a cable you can get from Checker/AutoZone. The cable is thicker--and needs to be. I suggest to get a OEM used cable from a seller or eBay. (maybe the 928 has a donor until you can pick one up?)

If you want you can build a negative cable with a length of 1 guage welding wire. Get a military battery clamp from NAPA and a few ends for the clamp, chassis and block. Do not use a cheap battery post clamp.

Put a piece of tape over the TDC hole on the bell housing before you begin work.
You do not want to drop a nut in the clutch.

This should help your flickering alternator light. If the Checker alternator goes bad again, I suggest getting a 115amp upgrade alternator from Eagle Electric on eBay. Usually for $115. The higher amp alternator is better for old wires with more resistance and aging fuel pumps and other components.

Where does the ground from the bellhousing connect to at the chassis?

I'll post a pic tonight of what I have.

The negative ground wire goes from the bellhousing post to the negative battery terminal.

This is one of the most important grounds. The alternator is bolted/grounded to the block and the negative cable completes the path to the battery.

The positive alternator wire goes to the starter, then back to the battery via the positive battery cable.

It looks like the ground that normally goes from the chassis to the bellhousing is mounted to the back of the head. So i'll switch that out.

I'm kinda confused with this though.

Are you refering to something like this, or the actual negative battery ground to chassis. I replaced the negative battery ground wire with a new from checkers. I'm probably go over to 20th street auto next week for a new positve battery harness. I talked to them and they said they would let me pull the best one they had.

Edit: BTW sorry LandSeer for stealing ur pics!

The blue ground strap has the correct ends. The picture shown looks like the correct thickness. The ground strap goes from the battery negative terminal to the bell housing post.

A second shorter ground strap goes from the battery negative terminal to the chassis ground----mine is in the battery compartment.

This is a military battery cable connector.

The yellow cable connectors are small versions of the larger battery ground strap ends---used with the military connector.

How does one crimp these ends to get it took like that? Do the connectors at napa come with rubber, or is like special..?
Is the big one soldered?

If you build your own, you would solder/propane torch the connection.

There is a special crimper that looks like a bolt cutter. You set it for the size of the wire and you get a perfect crimp. One of the mechanics at the airport has one that I have used. I would suspect that an auto electric shop may have one.

I've been chasing intermittent power issues for awhile now, and have gone through most of the basics (plugs, cap and rotor, O2 sensor, wires check, fuel filter, etc). But this thread got me thinking. Tonight I replaced the stock ground from chassis to bellhousing with a new 6ga ground wire from the local auto-buddy. I also cleaned all the contact points, as well as the bolts and washers.

Problem fixed! Thanks guys!
