A formerly whining and shaking 944
Ok... I didn't do it myself, but for those seeking what parts might be causing some of the symtoms that I had... I got my car back from the repair shop today in my quest to eliminate oil leaks and whines and shakes. It was a bit more expensive than I planned on... but what a difference!
They saved all the parts to show me. For the shakes: They replaced both motor mounts (1 was real bad and 1 was on it's way out... yea, it's only money). I have no idea why the local mechanic said the mounts were good... I don't think it'll ever go back to him again.. as I suspect he did the damage below when changing a gasket... For the whining sound: The water pump roller for the timing belt wasn't rolling freely. Asundry expensive items that might have been related to the above: They replaced timing belt, counterbalance belt, and tensioner rollers on timing belt and counterbalance belt (the parts looked like someone had used a pair of channel lock pliers to grip them to remove them and were gouged just the way you'd expect a pair of pliers to gouge any bolt that was tight and slipped the first few times, the teeth were covered with sharp burrs... and while my timing belt was less than 10k old, the belts were covered with wear marks and tiny punctures from where they were rubbing against the burrs on the damaged rollers. Also, they said they ruined a good pair of knuckles when they went to unbolt it as they were expecting a bolt torqued to 150+ foot pounds, but it was only hand tightend... (He also pointed out that this would have been a real nasty if the belt gear had started slipping...) Lastly, the distributer housing at the shaft was also gouged and the distributer drive shaft was wobbling slightly... that was only a $22 part... I'm not sure if it was here or in rennlist where someone said these car's ran rough when new, but even when starting and idling cold in todays 40 degree temperature... the car is 1000% better. It sounds like a totally different beast (no whining) I could drink a full cup of hot coffee at cold idle without fear...course, I don't drink coffee... 83 944-na |

Wow, sounds very familiar. That's what I had to do to mine. Except I changed the motor mounts my self. What a job! As with the belts and rollers, mine didn't whine at all. And I also froze up a roller. $500 later all is well. The belts whine now, but it sounds like normal belt whine.
