Squeak, Rattle and Vibrate....

I needed to post this. I have an exhaust issue (I think) My car has deveolped an odd squeaking situation after warm up. Sounds like the cat and all the hangers are squeaking. It also feels a little too (swingy) when I grab it and apply any movement to it. Is this a common occurance with this exhaust?..

Your hangars are probably shot.

Not too difficult to replace - soak all the bolts in a penetrating oil the night before you try to remove them - anti-sieze when you put them back on

should I just re-tighten them?..or have them removed and replaced at a shop?...

You can do it yourself if you have access to jackstands and some metric sockets.

It is just a matter of unbolting and removing exhaust parts and replacing the rubber shock absorbers.

If your hangars themselves (the metal parts that fit in the rubber parts) are corroded, you may consider taking it to a muffler shop for repair.

I may do that any way.. I have Jackstands, but I don't wanna snap a bolt off then have to take it there. THe Rubber Shock absorbers seem to be loose in the hanger, especially in the rear. Most of the noise seems to be coming from the Cat area.. a squeak then a tin vibrating sort of sound. is there something else I should keep an eye peeled for?

check to see if the O2 sensor is loose...mine was and i had a metallic sound coming from that area at different speeds...drove me nuts till i figured it out

I have a strange noise from the front, that sounds like the Fan spinning (on an older car) making contact with something metallic, but it's not the fan.. so I'm stumped as to what that is... I need Motormounts, and my tranny seems to be able to be moved a little bit.. (those mounts are shot also).. so, I'm on a hunt for noises....any suspects?

Loose heat shield as well (around the CAT)

yeah that'd be my guess....anything else?....

Hi Frank, I have the simular noises after the mechanic worked on my car, he may have had to pull a section of the exhaust and never alighned it properly. The heat shileds are vibrating more than ever on the and around the exhaust manifold.
It is easier to find the if you get the car on a lift and leave it running.

put her up on 4 stands............

start her up and rev it you should be able to easily spot the problem ...........

and no guessing :)

Frank B 03-24-2003 01:10 PM

no guessing.. it sounds so serious.....ooh...I'm getting a metallic weird noise from ther front end... could it be Stray's mystery O2 sensor noise?..hmm?hmmm?..

A large rubber mallet is usefull to find vibrations.

stray15 03-24-2003 04:31 PM

another thing i just thought it could be is the finigin pin, good be loose...

paulc 03-24-2003 04:33 PM
