Fuel Consumption

What is the normal rate of fuel consumption on these 944s? I get about 15-17mpg. I have 255 tires and lots of engine mods, but nothing to the fuel injection or the DME. I'm on the gas all the time, and I mean that! Should a 944 get 15mpg? If you're hard on it, I would think that you would be able to get about 18-19 regardless of how you drive it, but....What's your milage?

Your fuel consumption is normal. Mine gets about 22mpg, but I'm older and wiser! I don't drive on the gas alot.

Well thanks again for the reply, I just thought that 15 was a little too low, after all, the car was rated at something like 24mpg!

I'm stationed in Naples Italy and have a 17 mile highway and 3 mile city street comute to work everyday. I generally drive 75 mph on the highway and sometimes do the 17 miles at over 100mph. Ya gotta love European driving! I get on the average of 23 mpg.
15 mpg sounds really low. I would check the easy stuff firstlugs, wires, fuel lines, fuel filter, distrib/rotor, injectors, etc. Haynes and some Bosch books on FI/DME have pretty easy step-by-step instructions to check your FI components for faults using a multimeter. If these things check good I would have my car's emissions analyized and computer checked.

15-17 is about what I get from my 83 944. It needs a good tuning right now, plus I drive my car hard most of the time, and I only live 5 miles from work. It's all stop and go city traffic, so that with my hard acceleration gives me some low numbers. If I take it out on the highway, I get about 22-25 depending on conditions.

Thanks for the replys, my car is pretty much in perfect state of tune, I thought maybe something could be causing my mpg problems, I've gotten down to about 9-10, but I trully cannot imagine anybody driving harder than I do, so I guess it's possible to burn so much fuel. As I ease off I do see big gains in milage, but this is rather hard to do for me. I will try though as the gas prices are gouing up... Thanks again for all the replys.

About the mileage....I tried to post on Friday but I don't see it. Anyway, here is my 2 cents worth. I have a 944T with a mass flow, bigger turbo, higher fuel pressure, and an extrude honed intake with ported head. It's fairly powerful. Highway mileage in summer with AC on FLAT ground interstate driving is 30-31 going constant 72 mph. Around town it gets about 21-22 if you don't get into turbo. On the track it gets 8-10 mpg. I use road tires to get to track. Size is 225/60-16. That corrects the speedo on my 1986 which registered about 7% too high with 225/50-16 tires. Also corrected the odometer. Good luck.

Late 944 speedos read about 10% too optimistic at 100mph, with stock tires, I'm not sure if this applies to turbos.
