Rebuild Temperature Control Unit? PICS
Hi All,
As you can see in the picture, my Temperature Control Unit (TCU) is in need of attention. This is part number 94465302101 The red line shows where there is a complete crack through the left side mounting plate. The blue box shows the missing Ventilation Switch, and the red arrow points toward numerous smaller cracks. I am considering trying to create a new mounting plate via 3D printing but I don't know (yet) how everything is mounted to this plate; for example if something is epoxied I'm probably out of luck. Has anyone dug into the TCU enough to know if this is possible? How about replacement switches and the tiny bulbs? Try the other forum (Rennlist). There’s a Canadian guy who has been 3D printing these.
I had the same issue. Look into switch replacement, but it’s 100 bucks just for the switch! And my AC button was no good too. I ended up with a very nice used unit instead. |
These acrylic pieces were still available from Por$che if you want to go that route (It looks like they are no longer available). The replacements are for the 911 of the same vintage, and do not have the numbers on them, but function the same.
The switches are way expensive, and to replace the clear piece you need to desolder both sets of switches from the main board. Not for the faint of heart, IMO. Regarding the 911 reference: Others have said that the one available is from the 944 ROW cars (without the numbers). Ian over at 944 Online sells them, or used to sell them. I could not find a different PN for the ROW units in PET, so not totally sure. If you have to repair (because you cannot find a replacement) go here: https://www.tapplastics.com/product/repair_products/plastic_adhesives/tap_acrylic_cement/130 you can order acrylic bonding agent.
I have used this to make acrylic boxes and it flows into the joins (cracks) and essentially chemically welds the pieces together. I am not sure how it would react if it got on the PCB, but I imagine you would want to isolate the plate 1st. Just a thought. GHEN |

A while back I bought a couple of 3D printed acrylic plates from the Canadian guy that 944 S2 mentioned above. The finish wasn’t as good as the factory items but they fit and worked fine and after all they are hidden so you cannot see the finish once they are in place. Definitely a worthwhile part to 3D print as most will be cracked by now, just need someone to finesse the original file to make it perfect. Here’s an old picture I took before I fitted it. The slight cloudiness of the printed part doesn’t affect operation.

Is there a difference between how this plate mounts on your '86 951 vs. your '89 951? I read that the earlier cars required resoldering, but perhaps the later cars everything just snapped in. Do you happen to know if that is the case? BTW I reached out to the guy in Canada that was making these...no reply so far. GHEN |
