Stripping pollution controls from a 1977 924

I'll preface this by saying that I live in South Carolina, where we do not have safety or emissions inspections...

Can I strip the pollution controls from a 1977 924? EEG, EEC, air pump, etc.? What is the procedure? What is the gain/penalty? Anything special I need to be aware of?

Thanks!

Stripping emmisions controls tends not to do much at all. In some cars it actually makes performance worse. Almost all emmisions equipment functions during engine warmup and part throttle situations. When you step on it you are getting all you are going to get with or with emmisions. There are some exceptions, as follows:

Spark plugs: plugs tend to speced. with smog in mind, in fact if you spend some time selecting a plug that is good for your type of driving you will most likely get better performance and better mileage- and even better emissions. This is complemented by a wider plug gap (not too wide or you will need a better coil- plus too big a gap will shorten you plug life and make you succeptable to a misfire and or fouling. I got an Accel coil, and some Bosch Platinum plugs and regapped them to about .060" and it felt awsome- well as good as it could get with a 924 anyway http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif. BTW, a high voltage coil does not give you a hotter spark by default. You only use as much voltage as it takes to jump the gap, to increace the voltage you must increace the gap. High voltage coils are saturate quick to produce consistant voltage at high RPM as well.

Catalyst: Some catalysts are very restrictive especially in older cars. Removing it may shift the HP up in the RPM range, replacing it with a high flow unit may actually give you more power then a straigt through system. Your mileage may vary http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

Good luck,
Abdul

While your state may not have emissions requirements, do remember that it's a federal law and you risk a $10,000 fine for removing the parts if detected. Also should you sell the car in the future, you risk additional severe penalties for tampering with emissions equipment and selling the car.
