Strange noise coming from exhaust..

All,

I've recently got my 83 944 NA, and have just noticed a sort of "pop" noise come from what sounds to be the exhaust when I'm shifting gears and (occasionally) backing off the throttle.

It doesn't sound as loud or sharp as a backfire, and doesn't always happen at all.. just wondering if anyone had any ideas?

For the record, I'm probably going to change the muffler soon and put a straight-through pipe in place of the cat. Anybody got a WAV of their car with a Borla exhaust?

TIA and HAND,

// chris

I have what sounds as a similar problem. What I think I found it to be is the heat shield that runs down the center of the underside of the car for the exhaust. Get under there and play around with that shield and see what you think. I found what looks to be foam insulation breaking up and falling out. I don't know where to get the foam insulation though.

Thanks for that. I'll get the car up on a lift and have a look..

Anybody know where I can get a full mild- or stainless-steel exhaust for a 944? I can get one made, but it'll be about AUD$2100 (USD$1300 or so).

TIA and HAND

If the "pop" is coming from the tailpipe I wouldn't worry about it; it is normal, especially if it occurs during "spirited" driving.
