Rear cam tower cap leak
Had the cam tower off about a year ago to do all the gaskets and just now I've ran into one of the same leaks I had before. Rear cap on the cam tower actually came loose this time and leaked down the side of the block. When I had the tower off I actually had the cap bolts torqued but it seems like nothing will please this cork gasket. Has anyone tried ditching the cork gasket for rtv before?

I'll share a funny story and will try to keep it short. A few years back...just after I'd purchased my last 944 (an 85.5), I was pulled up to a stoplight when things started to get a bit smoky. Found oil dripping onto the rear header from what looked like one of the "classic" places - the infamous cork rear cam tower gasket. So I replace this but things kept leaking and smoking.
Long story short...I dropped the engine and eventually did a complete reseal. Good thing it did sort of need this - because in the process of taking things apart, I discovered several very loose cam tower bolts, located (you guessed it!) at the rear of the tower! To think I could have simply torqued these up and called it a day! But on the bright side of things...I had fun sealing my engine and learned a thing or two in the process! |

With or without the gasket? If with, both sides?
