Clutch Shot?

Last night I was coming home from work when something went wrong. I was at a red light and when it turned green I took off in first gear. All was okay. Then I put the clutch pedal in to shift into second and it wouldn't go into second, nor third or any other gear. I coasted to a parking lot and let it sit. The clutch pedal had lost most of it's resistance, but after letting it sit for a few minutes it got back it's resistance. Then I started it and pumped the clutch one or two times and it lost the resistance again. I think its my clutch that is shot but I don't know if it may be some other wierd problem and before I or someone else goes tearing into it, I just wanted your opinions. If it is the clutch, where is a good place with reasonable prices to get one from? Thanks for any comments and help.

Nate

The first place I would look is in Excellence Magazine. I think I have see them in there for something around $350. I had my machanic do mine and the final cost was $1,380, that also included replacing the timing belt, changing the oil, so just the clutch would be around $1,110. If you have the time, your better off doing it yourself.

Lack of resistance is either a worn out pressure plate (not likely if it was sudden) or a loss of hydaulic pressure (likely)

The usual culprit is the clutch slave cylinder. I've no idea how to fix it, but that sounds like your problem.

Stray15, where do I find Excellence magazine. Could someone that knows about master and slave cylinders tell me if this is a good possible problem and how do I check for it. Thanks

Sounds as if you have lost the Master or slave clutch cylinder. I suggest you check these first.

Well I finally had a chance to get under the car and look at it. I checked to see if the master and slave cylinders are working by depressing the clutch and I can see the pushrod from the slave cylinder move. I think this means that they are okay. That only leaves the clutch. Can it happen that the clutch just all of a sudden goes out? What might be the cause? I would like to hear all your opinions. Thanks, Nate
