Wheel center caps
I just bought new wheel center caps for my phone dials. I see that there are two holes in each cap. Iv'e heard a special tool is needed to remove the caps. I really don't want to damage the old caps by using the wrong tool. Anyone removed their caps before??

Take a look at ************************, I don't know if they have the tool on the web site, but I do know they have it in their catalog.

I have had three sets of Porsche rims, and all of them just pop out from the back, (with the rim removed)just tap it with a solid object (screwdriver handle or something of the like), I guess the holes are to remove them by pulling with the special tool without removing the rim.

Yes, Performance Products / Automotion (Same company now, they've merged) do indeed carry that special tool. I think it's about 20 bucks. I made one from .080 music wire and looking at the picture in the catalog too. It is simply for removing the centers while the wheels are still on the car. Probably the right way to really do it too since the friction lock that keep s them in there will tend to release better while being "pulled" in like that as opposed to being pressed or knocked on from the rear. Hmm, pulling the centercaps from the outside is just the same as pushng them from the inside... The only advantage that I can see to use the tool is the ability to pull them off with the wheels still on the car.
When I used to work at GoodYear, I'd (we'd) always take the centercaps off by pushing them off from the inside. That's the way Porsche does it too... Again, the tool is only necessary to pull them out, with the wheel still on the car... I've had one of my centercaps seperate into two, the outer painted part, and the inside copper?... However this is all on the same car that goes through wheel bearings quite often, strut mounts, struts, tires, even the speedo cable came loose... I think this was because of some modifications that I suppose could be considered "severe" for street use, specially on an early car. Carter, beaware, your right front cap is the one I'm talking about, however after cleaning and superglue, it was fine when I had it... Anyway, would I buy the tool? No, would I make a tool? Well, I just use a 3/4ths drive to push them out from the inside... Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |
