1987 944 NA - Left turn signal Issue/Central Electrical "D" Connector diagram?
TLDR; Does anyone know where I could find a detailed diagram of the "D" connector that goes into the '87 944 fuse box? Color coded with what wires goes where? I feel as though mine has been tampered with by a previous owner and was put together wrong.
Full Story for those who are interested. I've been working on trying to get my left turn signal working on my 1987 NA 944. (At least I think it's NA. Bonus points if anyone knows how to identify this.) My right turn signal works fine, but the left does not turn on and I do not get the lovely green light on my dash. I can rule out the bulbs and relay as a culprit because all turn signals flash when the hazards are turned on. Great. People have told me to buy a switch. I've been stubborn and was ready to tear it apart and try to clean the contacts, but the switch passed an Ohm test so it can't be the switch. Ok then. I have started to Ohm test the switch assembly connector to the fuse box. - Right turn signal to Fuse 32 is good. - Left turn signal to Fuse 31 is bad. This can only leave the wiring from the connector to fuse box being bad. I pulled out the fuse box, only to find a completely exposed wire going into the "D" connector with the wire simply wrapped around an existing wire inside the wiring mess that has NO INSULATION whatsoever. However, I found the red/green wire that is on the backside of the turn signal assembly connector and found where it goes into the "D" connector and there is continuity. Now the problem I face is this mysterious unsheathed wire that I can't identify. If the wire for the left turn signal is good, why do I not have continuity to the fuse? I've checked the wiring diagrams but I don't know the orientation of the "D" connector and which way everything goes. If I am looking at this connector right, and reading the diagram correctly, the left turn signal wire is in the wrong spot. My next step is to cut the tape on my wiring harness is trace this mysterious wire to the source or at least to where the sheathing is good. I've gone back about 6 inches and there's nothing but exposed unraveled copper. Thanks for reading this far in and listening to my story. If anyone knows where I can find a detailed diagram of the connector, or have a picture that shows the wires, colors, and proper connections, I would greatly appreciate it. |

Do you have the PET wiring diagram? If you google "vol4-electrical.pdf" you should be able to find a copy.

Ie: is D34 left to right 3 down 4 or down 3 right to left 4. I would assume it's the first. I see the numbers on the plug 1-5 so that helps. The red and green wire says it's supposed to go to slot D34 but it's in slot D22. |

Hope this helps. (It helps if I read the user manual on my camera...)

944 Ecology, you have no idea how thankful I am for your pictures. Major kudos to you! Looks like my wires are in the same spot. Based on your picture, it's the solid brown wire that has been Frankensteined together. I'm still going to need to trace this wire back.
Still worries me though that I cant get continuity from the left turn signal wire at the connector to the left turn signal fuse. I'll work at that once I repair this wire. I finally got back out and got some pictures. https://imgur.com/a/yllxaHp Is it is possible to repair the wire that goes into the connector? I would love to not have that exposed wire chilling at the connector. |

That sounds good. I'll do it that way.
So it's the ground wire for sure. According to my year models wiring diagram, this ground runs all the way to the trunk. How stupid would it be to ground this in a different location a little closer to the fuse box? |

Try it and see how it works. If it doesn't you can always run a parallel (brown) wire to the fuse box to bypass the broken wire.

It's been a while, BUT I have finished meddling with the wiring and trying to fix things to the best of my abilities.
...it was the ground wire... I dont know how everything managed to work as well as it did but the left turn signal works now and I havent had time to test much else. If all else fails, check your wiring! |
