[update] brake pads bought, now trans scaring me

So I need to order brake pads today. The primary reason I'm buying them is for the drivers ed coming in a week, but also they'll remain on there for daily driving thereafter.

From Pelican, my options seem to me Jurid or Mintex (the cheaper versions of both). Everyone seems to recommend Pagid, but for a 951 the only option is the really pricey Pagid S pad. They say they are for track/street.

With Jurid the front-back cost will be ~$100
Mintex, it would be ~$72
With the Pagid, ~$340

If this matters, my rotors are stock. Advise?

(note: I am very concerned about brakes working when I'm on the track so I don't soil myself)

Stock rotors are fine. Been using them for years. If you do a lot of track events, you might want to duct the front brakes. In addition to the pads, you must change the brake fluid if it is more than several months old.

As for the pads, I've never used any of what you are considering. I have seen others using all the brands you cite, however. I did not hear any complaints.

I use PF but they are nasty and might corrode your wheels. Hawk is another track favorite.

I use KFP Magnum Gold pads. Wonderful stopping power, the wear pretty decent, and they won't eat up your rotors.

They do squeel like a stuck pig, and brake dust can be an issue.

I forgot to mention. PF pads squeal like stuck pigs too. And brake dust is abundant.

Z-man, where does one buy KFP pads? Thanks.

Tell them Zoltan sent you, and they may drop the shipping costs!

Unhappy Got brake pads, now tranny is scaring me

I ended up ordering the Mintex pads (the steet ones). I figure I'll burn through those, and then get a set of track pads later on. (note: I ordered the wrong pads at first, cause the ones with 951 in the model # are actually for another vehicle).

Anyhow, now I have to figure out why my transmission started to sound like a tie fighter during a drive. I was on a back road trying to get comfortable braking hard (so I'll be ready for the track) and at some point the tranny started sounding very funny. Loud screeching (not as harsh a sound as screeching would lead you to believe, but its the closest approximation) under de-accel and grinding under accel. Even idling in neutral the sound is audible, and only goes away when the clutch is in. Its done it a few times before, but only a bit under de-accel and it would go away. God, and with my first drivers ed this weekend. I hope it can make it through it. I just realized I should make this a new post. Any thoughts? Should I be as concerned as I am?

Note: I do know my clutch is only a little over a year old, was put in by a very well respected porsche mech.

Not a good time for unusual noises to appear. Do you have the LSD tranny? I've seen '86 turbos without them. The LSD version is a stronger tranny.
