Shifting without the clutch
Ok, who here shifts without the clutch? I really want to try it more, but don't want my transmission falling out! Can somebody please advice me on how close the RPMs need to be? What are the speed ranges that it's safe to do it at? Assume a flat road.
Also... a dumb question... does one need to press the clutch when shifting from a gear to neutral??? I figure maybe not, but don't have the balls to just try it. Thanks. |

I will say a couple of things...
First, in my Scirocco, I shifted without the clutch, and without matching RPM, about half the time, no problem. My manager at GoodYear made it home, and back after the clutch broke in his VW Bus... Now, the second: I match RPM to within 50 or so in my 944, don't ever recall dumping the clutch on the last 4 (explained later), never shifted without the clutch ALL THE WAY in... The car WAS on it's 4th transaxle, which broke it's LSD this past wednesday. I've also wondered the same, and would try it, but my budget doesn't allow me! What do I have to say about this transaxle design? Well, firt there's children reading this post, Second I'm sure I'd regred it as soon as I drive the car again at an auto-x! What in the world do you do to mess your car up so much Ahmet??? And I know you "drive it hard," but it must take more than just that?!

I do drive the car hard, and it doesn't really "mess up", if you don't count suspension bushings, and this transaxle thing. I do NOT know why I've broken so many of them, though I'd like to believe that since I keep buying the cheapest piece of junk ones, it's natural for them to break. And that the transaxle in the 944s are really fragile. I see people shift SO much harder than me in their 951, it's funny.
Well, my other problems since I bought the car:, a stuck thermostat, stuck oil pressure relief valve, front A-Arm, and strut mounts coming apart, wiper motor relay, and windshield defroster broken... Obviously I could not have (directly) affected any of these, save for the transaxle, and the suspension bushings. The car is still solid, interestingly so, I drive it at 10/10ths more than half the time, ofcourse with respect to broken pavement, traffic and so on... Note: I suspect except for the 3rd gear synchro breaking on one of the transaxles (I honestly don't know why!), all the transaxles I've had in the car had the diff come apart, and all were LSDs. However, with all the transaxles, I could sense vibration when LSD was working, such as in an auto-x, turning hard one way, and applying power. I suspect even when they rebuild these transaxles, they do not go through the LSD. Afterall, a new LSD sells for 2-4k, and a whole rebuilt transaxle goes around 1-2k. That makes me think, maybe all they do is change the synchros, clean it really good, paint it, and sell it. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

shifting without clutch only happens when after 1st gear(unless car is rolling )it can be done to any car..once car is rolling and you put it in neutral try to pop the gas pedal between 1500 to 2000 rpm..when the rpm needle starts to go down try shifting but smoothly though....it you want there is also another trick...when you open up the transmission you can remove some of the syncrho teeth(but you you don't want to do that)....one trick of modifying the trans....

In my Volkwagen I can make it look like I have a tiptronic, but I tried it once in the Porsche and couldn't do it so I vowed only to do it if the clutch went out. You don't even have to be in 1st gear to not use the clutch. If it goes out, put the car in 1st gear and without pressing the clutch in, start it up and give it some throttle and off you go. I don't advise this unless you don't have a clutch.
