engine swap

I HAVE A 87 944(N/A) AND I WANT TO SWAP THE ENGINE FOR A "S"OR "S2" TO GAIN A LIITLE MORE POWER.WHICH ENGINE TYPE WOULD BE THE
MOST COST EFFECTIVE,AND WHAT OTHER CHANGES
ARE NEEDED?

The cheapest and most cost effective way would be to trade up to the 944 that has the performance level you desire.
By the time you spend the money to upgrade
your 944 normal you could have an S, S2 or
a turbo with all the extras [big brakes,
suspension,etc.] and have acar with higher resale.
