944 common problems
I am looking at buying a '86 944 (oval dash), it has covered 90,000 miles and the body looks to be in good order, the panels are all straight and the shut lines are all even.
The car has the 16inch tele dials on it and as a whole it looks to be a straight car, is there anyone who could tell me what to look for as far as the mechanical side of it is concerned, i have experience of fixing up cars but i have not dealt with these cars before. My eye and heart say yes, all i have to do now is convince my brain (and the wife) ![]() [This message has been edited by doctor13702 (edited 08-20-2000).] |

Is it a turbo or not?
The usual stuff on a 944: Proper maintenence records belts (timing) been changed Most 944's need a water pump some time in thier lives does the AC work? can be expensive... steering racks are prone to leaking. ever had a clutch? it's better to let somebody else pay for that one first! I am not sure about the NA but every turbo I have had has needed ball joints (the whole A arm has to replaced to fix it correctly) Damn Michigan roads! |

I have taken the car out for a drive, and it was real good, it does not shimmy at all and it feels real taught, i noticed that the speedo wanders a bit at times, is it electric? and the windows are stuck up, one of them sounds like it wants to move but does not, i have a pair of motors from a '82 924 and i was going to try them out on it.
The speedo is the most serious thing, if it is electric where is the sensor? Thank to all you guys for all your help and advice Doc |

The window switches on my 83 944 fail every 5 years or so and are cheap to replace. Maybe one of the switches has failed on one window. The button and switch are combined, try prying out the button with a screwdriver and switching the window buttons around and you can figure out whether or not the switch is broken.
The other window's problem is probably not a switch if the window motor is struggling. Fortunately (for me), I've never had this problem. |

Timing belt, water pump, clutch, as 951EATS5.0 mentioned, but add fan sensor, fan, CV joints, motor mounts. No starts can be frustrating to fix. I think the electric speedometer picks up on the driver's side of the transmission by the cv flange.

Thamlin, the button, and the actual electrical switch are NOT combined...
I'm kinda confused as to if you realize this, cause you talk about seperating the two and trying them at different locations??? Anyway, I've had my car for 2.5 years or so now, and know both it's previous owners, to the best of our knowledge, it's NEVER had the switches replaced, but one got a little "intermittent" about a year ago. After I seperated the button, from the actual switch, I took the switch apart. All it needed was a bit of cleaning, and slight bending of the little springs to restore the good feel, and after using some "contact enhancer" (but not the fancy type Lawrance is posting about elsewhere), and ofcourse cleaning in between, they've all worked beautifully since. After doing this to my passanger side window, I noticed it sped things up a bit, so I went onto doing all 3 switches. It helped all around, ofcourse seeing this, I took the door panel off, and took apart every little wiring connection, cleaned, and sprayed some contact enhancer on it, put it backtogether, didn't really notice a differance but... Then, after all this, I took the crankshaft out, and used some contact enhancer on that, and now the handling of the car is a little bit more "weltmeistery"... Ok, the last paragraph I just made up ![]() So in conclusion, the switches can be taken around... All this is on an early 944, I'm not sure if it'll work on the later types... Someone, somewhere, at sometime told me that the button and switch on 944s were combined as one. So when I pryed the button off, I figured I pryed the switch off with it. And the button and switch are sold as one piece. Is that correct? Anyone?

Right, you probably pulled both out, at that stage, you could have went further, and seperated the two.
I wouldn't be surprised if they sell the button, and the actual switch as one piece, as they seem to like that type of thing... Remember the arm rest/hinge, they used to be sold as one piece, aftermarket was quite competitive, and now the dealer will sell them seperately too...
