shifter angle

Just a general question. I have a shifter that is straight up and down, no gangsta lean like I see in youtube videos where they are going for a slight rake in the angle, like 80 degrees versus 90 degrees like mine. Mine is literally straight up pointing to the roof.

Coincidentally I am having intermittent shifting trouble going into first. I don't seem to have a lot of play sometimes it just won't go in without a few seconds of manipulating. I was thinking of buying a new linkage or the replacement shifter stem and tighten up, but I am wondering about my angle.

Any thoughts?

This guy makes some great repair videos and in this one he's doing a simple one: replacing the shifter lever. He sets it at 85 degrees. I thought this slight rake was mostly for aesthetics, but could be wrong.

Just installed a short shift kit in my 86 944. Shifts like a dream. I set the new shifter to 85 degrees back. (As per Clarks Garage). When I changed out the stock linkage at transaxle, I removed the stock setup all together and set new one to same specs before install. Required no further adjustments.

thanks. i did see that video and that is why i was questioning mine being straight up. I will probably to the short shifter linkage and replace the shifter at the same time.

I bought and installed the only944 shift linkage (top piece, not the short shift linkage)

Amazing difference, about 90% better. Very easy to replace. I had a lot of left to right slop play and now it is very tight and crisp.
