Reference and Speed Sensors Question
 

In the process of removing engine from 1985/1 NA Manual. Got everything loose and just waiting on my 7 year old grandson to come run the hoist to lift it out of the engine bay (starting him early!). I went to remove the sensors and found the bolts just about inaccessible, so removed the bracket with the sensors attached. Has anyone seen the bolts recessed in the sensors like this? The last time I did this, the bolts were easily accessible with a socket. Any ideas on getting them out? Shave off the ribs on the sensor body? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1610509600.jpg

Somebody who worked on this car in the last 35 years has replaced the shouldered bolt with the standard bolt. That is why the bolts are inaccessible. The shouldered bolt stand proud about a quarter inch.

Good idea to dremel down the sides of the sensor to access the bolt. Just enough to get a socket over the head of the bolt should work.

That seems like the easiest route.

You could also cut a slot in the bolt head for a big flat head screwdriver, or tack a nut to the top if they're really frozen in there. Obviously replace the bolts with the correct shouldered versions, and it'll be like nothing ever happened.

And that was the question I had after posting. Got them out with a 10mm open end wrench. They were not very tight. One needed a little lube to pull out.

If you cant source the exact bolt I heard that the rear bolt for the seat rail is very similar and can work.

I used an allen head bolt on mine. I suspect the original got dropped and lost so a spare bolt was used. Does it matter which sensor goes where and which connector they are connected too? I see there is a letter designation on the engine side next to each sensor but no corresponding ID on the connector side at the harness.

They are the same part. Mine had same part number on them. But, it is important to make sure the connections are right. I have seen several no-start posts where folks aren’t sure they got the connections right and have to trace them down.

A "thin wall" 12 point 1/4" drive socket will probably fit on them
