Fuch rim size on early model

After reading some posts about the Fuchs wheels it seems that many cars have 7x15 on the front and 8x15 on the rear. Is this how the option was fitted from the factory? I would have never guessed that the front and rear wheels were different, but now I'll need to crawl under the car to look for the size stamped into the rims fitted to my 1984 to see if they're different.

If the fronts are 7" wide and the rear 8", should one fit the same size and type of tire to both the front and rear?

Yes they came from the factory with 7x15f and 8x15r if you had that option. You can easily tell the difference from the front of the wheel as the rear wheels have a noticeable extra 1” lip when compared to the front wheels. You can fit the same tires all around or wider at the rear, up to you. Most people fit wider tires at the rear as it’s not as if you can rotate them anyway.

Holy cow - you're absolutely right. I didn't notice the difference until you suggested I take a look. Wow - thanks a lot.

Rim sizes are the same - tire widths different. I'm the original owner of my 83: the cookie cutters were standard, Fuchs were an option. Off the top of my head, the rim size was 15.

In 2006, I was having difficulty finding tires for 15 inch rims: Even 16s are difficult too. After some research, I sold my cookie cutters and moved to 17s - I have a set of aftermarket turbo twists. BTW the front widths are different than the rears. Wheel and tire set-ups vary for every driver and driving style. I don'tt think there is a one size fits all. However, if you want to retain the original look, I respect that.

1) Base wheel was 7x15" cookie cutters with 215/60-15 on all 4 corners.

2) Optional - Fuchs wheels. 7x15 front, 8x15 rear. However, they also ran the same 215/60-15 on both rim sizes.

2a) Also optional - 16" Fuchs. 7x16 front, 8x16 rear. 205/55-16 front, 225/50-16 rear.

3) 15" tire options have dwindled over the years.

4) You could also fit a 225/50-15 all around ( 7 or 8" wheels) if you wanted to improve some sporting behaviour at the loss of ride comfort.. it may provide more options in brands/styles however

If you have it, the Porsche owners manuals were very good about stating the various available rim/tire sizes for the model in question.

I've seen both over the years. Considering just how picky you could be with the Porsche catalogue, either is "ok". Sometimes they even have hand painted crests. Or the Fuchs could be color matched to the cars exterior color. Or a contrasting color. Catch my drift?

The painted ones were not stock in 1984 - I had cookie cutters and hand painted the stock black centers and over time the paint chiped away, I didn't like the way they looked and switched back to black. - In 83, the Fuch's centers were black.

I actually have an 84 brochure. Optional wheel centers: Grand Prix Whiteor or Platinum Metallaic.

I guess that's why the black paint has mostly flaked off of mine - somebody must have sprayed them black at some point.

Was the Porsche crest painted black within the white or platinum background or was the crest also the same whitish color?

Chris, I don't know the answer to that . There are allot of DYIs on Youtube, discussions on Rennbay. Caps are found on Ebay, Amazon, Porsche and our host too.

There is no wrong answer - I think it is up to what looks best on your car.

My Fuchs caps were originally black, but faded to a silver-gray over the years. In pics they very much look silver, but up close you can see that they were black.

My ex 83 - came from the factory 944 with the the options mention by Racer....205-55-16 front....225-50-16 rear & spend her entire life on them
They were not originaly polish lips ,that was done later with painted center caps & chrome lugs nuts.
