Muffler Insanity
My 1984 944 has a modified exhaust with 2.5" piping leading to a flowmaster muffler and a cute little upturned twin tailpipe. It sounds like crap and is loud enough to wake the dead. I'm no longer 16 years old and would actually like to pass a car and still talk to my passenger.
My internet search for a muffler to replace the flowmaster doesn't give me much hope. Every vendor is advertising their boy racer harmonics rather than giving me a decibel out the tailpipe number. Does anyone have any insight or opinions on a daily driver, won't piss off the neighbors muffler that I can weld into the place of the flowmaster? Some verbiage other than the crap copy written by the ad-men? Even the online reviews are leading me down the "loud pipes save lives" hogwash. Yes, I know...if it's too loud, I'm too old. Thanks in advance and feel free to flame

I've seen the Dansk in my search - it would officially double the value of the car. I'll be doing the remove/weld/replace so the major expense is the hardware and I'd like to have my passenger still talking to me after the change...otherwise it defeats the purpose :-)
I appreciate the lead, but it is a last resort. |

Call DC Auto or another porsche "junk yard" and have them send you a used factory unit!

It may be easier to find someone parting out a 944 and buy the complete original exhaust system. Likely wouldn't cost a ton and the car will sound great. I like the sound of the car with the original exhaust system. Has a nice tone and is fairly quiet.

Like Mr. Verx...I also feel that the exhaust note from the original exhaust system is just about perfect - although it very occasionally has a tendency to drone a bit...but mostly if I happen to be lugging the engine when I should be downshifting - so it serves me right!
