headlights go up and down, windows don't work
hi, i've got a problem and don't know how to address it.
i've pulled out the POWER WINDOW MOTOR RELAY (no 944.615.116.00) by mistake, returned it to place but since then the power windows don't work, the headlights go up and down even when the car is turned off and the parking lights are always on.the only way to stop it is by disconnecting the battery. it's a 1989 Porsche 944 S2. tried replacing the relay but still the same problem.. what should i do? thank you all for your help and kind replies! Welcome Ben,
I don't know the answer to your question but want to roll out the welcome mat. One thing I was told when I first arrived here and has been invaluable is to make sure you know about: Clark's Garage Home Page. This is an amazing resource created by a gentleman no longer with us, named Clark. Select the Workshop Manual tab and go have a look around. For your specific issue, someone with the right knowledge will likely chime in. This is an excellent forum and community. Best of luck, John

Ben:
Sorry to hear of your problem with your car. First and foremost, never work on the Electrical system in these cars without first disconnecting the Battery Ground cable from the battery. I am assuming from your post, that because you replaced the relay while the circuit was "live" you may have damaged the relay as well as other components on that circuit. As you mentioned, you now have lights going up and down and the window's switches are not working properly. I will take a look at my notes from a car I restored to see if it helps. But, you may have some "ground" issues going on as well. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery and then begin cleaning/checking all of your ground connections within the engine compartment, especially near the motor for the lights (near the coil) and then get a good flashlight so you can see the bottom of the fuse box and grounds that live near inside the firewall; driver's side. I take the driver's seat out so I can lie on the floor and look straight up. To test your relays, you can use the battery or 12volt source with a couple of wire leads. Connect one side to + battery and then the - battery...the plus side will go to the relay terminal 30 and the negative to relay terminal 87. If you hear/feel a click then your relay should still be good. Bad news is, you may have to replace that relay again with new as well as the Bridge Adapter relay for your windows to start working and the Windows motor relay again to get the lights to stop going up and down, since that relay may have gotten damaged in the process. Right now, however, it sounds to me as if you have a "short-to-ground" situation happening which needs to be addressed. Good luck and keep us posted. If you need relays, I may have some extras around here. ![]()

problem solved!
wow, thank you so much for your detailed answer!
i took the car to the mechanic, he went over all the circuits and checked the old and new relays, and then figured out what the problem was- i mistakenly put the relay at the wrong socket!!! felt very stupid, but at least it was a quick fix! thank you again for taking the time and sharing your knowledge have a great weekend, Ben |
