1987 944A lightweight flywheel options?
Hi, everyone,
Are there any lightweight flywheel options for "87 944S? Let me know if there are any and if it's worth installing lightweight flywheel versus stock (stock is about 16 lbs). Thanks. |

There might be, but since the flywheel for the 16 valve 944 cars is an unusual one (the flywheel has teeth with one missing to enable the ignition and fuel injection timing with only one sensor) it is unlikely that a vendor has made the investment for only a few cars, compared to the 8 valve 944 cars.
Of course, I could be wrong, but I have not heard of one.

George,
is it possible and feasible to drill holes and balance a stock flywheel to make it lighter? Would it help in achieving extra HP by reducing weight? I'm talking about flywheel's weight, not mine! |

Of course, anything is possible, if you have enough time and money.
I have not seen it done to a stock flywheel, and I hang around with racers who spend a lot of time and money on making their cars faster. There are other ways to reduce the weight of a car, mostly cheaper than engine and flywheel modifcations.

Thanks, George.
Noted. The only thing that I might achieve is a faster RPM drop upon depressed clutch. |

When I had mine, and access to a big lathe I cut maybe 1/4” deep from the periphery in about 2”, to where it gets thinner. I removed about 2 pounds of material from the backside but don’t remember noticing much difference driving it

I don’t know anything about racing but in driving and fooling around sometimes I’d use my gears to slow into a curve winding things up and then when I shift back up coming out that kinetic energy gives you a little push ahead. Bit if coordination with doubleclutching a foot in the brake and the gas sort of.. it acts like a gyro.
It wouid be interesting to hear from someone who does race and hear how someone experienced approaches this and their thoughts in this. In my Volvo I left it heavy and stock intentionally but I know a racer would probably want it lighter maybe more snappy throttle response and faster gear changes. Maybe if it’s street driven the comfort level is affected ? Some make their cars fast but some things affect drivability and comfort as well so it’s probably worth questioning your expected target and how you will actually use it. Interesting topic |
