944S valve stem seals

I have what I believe to be worn valve stem seals. -smoke on start-up that dissapears once car has run for a couple of blocks. I was wondering if anyone had had this problem and also if the repair requires removing the head. I know some cars (honda) can have the stem seals replaced with the head on. My reason for asking is that I am getting the timming belt replaced soon and need to know if it needs to be done at the same time or not.
