front oil seal

How do you replace the front oil seal? I've got all the belts off and the gears on the crankshaft but the book doesn't say how to remove the front seal. Thanks.

I maintain an '83 944.

When you say "front oil seal", do you mean the front main seal?

Have you taken the timing belt off yet?

Yes the front main seal. I didn't relize it was part of the oil pump.

I have the timming belt off but I don't have the pullies for the balance shaft belts of yet because I don't have a pin wrench another tool to get .

What other seals should I replace while I'm at it? Thanks.

Hey Kaffine Krazed
Go to Sears & buy a $5, 90 degree tipped needle nose pliers -- these work perfectly for holding these rollers - good luck!

The Porsche tool isn't too expensive (around $30 I think? you can rent it from Pelican too), and it's available from Pelican Parts, Performance Products, etc...

BTW, I hear that unless it's leaking, you shouldn't worry about moist front OR rear main seals, reson being, they don't always seat right, and the new gasket may leak even worse... Just make sure you do everything by the book, torque the bolts right, and don't leave any marks on the mating surfaces.

Good luck, keep us updated.

I went to Harborfreight and got a spanner wrench set (kind of a redundent name) for $15 with an adjustable pin wrench.

It's leaking alot. If it stops raining I'll have the rest of it torn down tommorow. I just wish I had a good exploded view of all the parts and seals.

Why is it they always wait until school starts to break down?
