Water Pump
I might have found a 944. 1985 Blk/Blk, I don't know yet if it's early or late '85, I emailed him again with a load of more questions.
It's got ~53k original miles, but leaks coolent, and his mechanic said that it's the water pump. Is that an expensive procedure? Is it still worth it to buy the car? Could someone direct me to a source that would show me how to do this? Would the timing belt have to be replaced along with it, or could it wait until 60k? If it's not '85.5 I'm going to pass anyway. But it's got low miles, all the maintanence records, and it's close to here. Looks okay so far. Thanks, Josh |

Water pump is driven by the timing belt. Good idea, once in there to change the pump, rollers, seals, etc. If you do the job yourself, most gurus still advocate having the belt tensioned with the infamous P9201 tool (about 450 bucks). Better to have it done by someone who has been in there before in my opinion. I will tackle anything on the car but without the tool, you may not feel comfortable. Also, a new belt, according to the experts, should be retensioned after about 1500 miles at an additional cost of about 150 bucks. Then you are good to go for a whole 15k. Ain't low maintenance cars wonderful?
