Guess what I just test drove

...Well I was driving around looking for 944s when i drove past some dealership with a '99 boxter. I check out the car...hop in ..play with buttons..then I go to look at the engine BUT I CANT SEE IT. You have to take out a bunch of panels to even get at the engine. So im like "seeing as i have a porsche theyd probably let me test drive it". Of course they let me and I got a cool guy to come with me. First we went on the highway. I floored it in 2nd and i was apalled to see it wasnt much faster than my lil ol' 944. Then i was cruising at about 85, it ran really smooth. Then I got off and he brought me to some twisties and he told me to test it out. So i drop it in 3rd and go. It handled pretty damn nice, it had 17s on it. Anyways I ended the test drive by honking at some girlies walking on the side of the road.

The moral of the story, I wasnt impressed with the boxter. 944 all the way.

I saw a red 924s on the same road..i might check that out tomorrow.

If it was not much faster than your 944, then either it was severly in need of service, or you have a built to the nuts 944. I too have driven a few Boxters and came away very impressed. A local '99 Boxter with only race tires on it regularly gives the Amod cars a run for their money at the auto-x.

yeah i could see if it was a 96-98 Boxster 2.5... those were criticized for being wimpy... but the 2.7 engine is supposed to be boffo...

I recently test drove a 2003 Boxster last weekend and I was impressed. I really enjoyed it, and the shifter was a joy to work. A great car.

A 986 may not have mad power, but it handles very, very nice. That's why the guy told you to take it to some twisties.

Want faster straight line acceleration? Get a Mustang or Vette. Porsches don't make good straight-line acceleration cars.

I have an S2 and my friend had a 2.7 boxster until recently. The S2 will beat the boxster in acceleration - I know because we raced them both from the lights. Around the bends I think they're about equal although the boxster is a lot smoother and easier to drive around the twisties.

Cool

we're fortunate enough to have an 89 s2 and an 01 boxster.
my wife drives the boxster and i get the s2. my opinion is #1 there is a great difference in technology (early 80's vs late 90's)
the s2 is more seat of the pants a bit harsh at times but a real
hoot to drive. perfomance is very similar to the boxster. the 01 boxster has a bit more power than the 99 and earlier. handling is similar although the boxster seems quite a bit more refined and quiet. my choice for a winner is the one i'm behind the wheel at the moment.
regards from central wisconsin
where we have winter and 3 weeks of summer!
