1984 fan resistor location

Just in case anyone was wondering...
I've seen many posts regarding resistor locations but I haven't seen a pic of the early models. Anyway, here it is, the puck looking thing connected by two wires right behind the tach. Yep, you have to remove the instrument panel, steering wheel, etc. Not so bad when you've done it a million times...

I have a relay there in that spot, dont remember if the puck was underneath or not Have part number somewhere. Post that # in a bit. And guessing you talking about the front defroster fan resistor?

Thekidd,
The resistor is actually for the driver's side cooling fan. I'm in there for other stuff and just decided to take the pic.

Gawernator,
I clean them off every day. It sucks not having a garage.

So, here's the situation...

The resistor reads 1.9 ohms.
The AC fan relay tests fine, the other fan relay is new.
Both fans run on high when the ac is turned on and when the operating temp is getting close to hot.
The driver's side fan does not turn on when the radiator switch is jumper-ed.
Why does the driver's side fan not turn on low? I've already looked into Clark's Garage; maybe I'm missing something and appreciate any insight.

Hope everyone's Christmas was great! I didn't touch the car today at all and feel a little guilty...

I also want to confirm: When the two leads are jumper-ed at the radiator fan temp switch, do both fans kick in on high or does only the driver's side fan run low?
Thanks!!!!!

According to Clark's with the thermo switch jumped, the driver side fan should come on slow speed only.
I have never tried it on my '84 to confirm it first hand though.

Does your driver side fan come on to help cool the car down after a long drive?

I will test my switch for you and let you know for sure this week though. My fans act a little strange sometimes
too. I think the only time the driver side fan comes on slow speed in my '84 is after a nice drive and it helps cool it down while sitting after I take the keys out.

Both fans always come on when the switch gets hot enough to close, and some of my early 944 friends have told me that the driver side fan is suppose to come on "slow speed" first... which never happens.

I have that same damn relay, and asked the same question as well and never got a good answer as to what the hell it is...

I agree with Kevin, having had to re-do my cooling system a few years ago. When the thermal switch is jumped, the driver side fan SHOULD turn on at slow speed. The reason there is only one resistor on the series one car is that only the driver side fan has slow and fast speed.

Both fans come on when reaching high engine operating temp and when the AC is turned on however; I have yet to witness the driver's side fan turn on low at any time. Since the car is under some snow (thankfully under a decent car cover), I must wait until the weather clears up a bit.

The driver side fan should start at slow speed on a series 1 car. That is why there is one resistor. On 85.5 cars and later when the fans start (and both of them should) they will be running at slow speed until high temp is reached or you turn on the AC. That is why they have 2 resistors. Check with Clark's garage or RTM.

I understand the circuit however; the fan doesn't kick on when appropriate. I think there may be a wiring issue (corrosion, open) that's causing fan malfunction. It's just too cold and snowy here right now and, unfortunately, I am without a garage...

I believe you are correct in your diagnosis pfarah. When you get the opportunity you can follow the process of elimination. In Series 1 cars, the components often suffer from fatigue or they just quit working. I'm sure you are familiar with the usual suspects.

Smokin,
With the extreme cold here, I have no excessive heat issues.

This thread has really helped me understand some of the details of the radiator fans/resistors.

I only have high speed on my A/C fan which tells me I need to look at the resistors for that. Does anyone know where they are?

TIA

AKCJ,
Both fans should turn on high when the AC is turned on and stay on for the duration.

Thanks for the reply. I'm actually looking for the location of the resistor(s) that allows the lower speeds on the A/C fan (cabin cooling, not radiator cooling). Does anyone know where to look?
