There is this piece that goes around the front of my catalytic converter that is rattling like hell at 1000 rpms. It looks like just a heat shield or something. It looks like it was just welded around the converter. Well now the welds from the piece to the converter have broken loose but the shield is still in one piece and it slides back and forth on the front of the converter and rattles like hell. Is this thing in fact just a heat shield, or does it serve some other purpose that I don't know about? Can I just take it off? It is a seperate piece of metal from the converter, the converter will still be in tact if I take the shield off. It looks like it's about to fall off anyway. Do I even need this stupid thing?

My '84 944 has a heat shield above the converter so I suppose yours is about the same. You might could remove the converter and possibly screw (very carefully) the shield to the undercarriage. I wouldn't recommend removing the shield, it's there for a reason.

Your catalitic converter gets incredibly hot while your engine is running. If you remove that heat sheild your just asking for trouble. Unless you really like the smell of burning carpet. You should be able to get someone to weld it back on without to much trouble.

Yeah, just go to any muffler shop and they can weld it back on for cheap.

Interesting, I had the same problem...
Solution? Another allowed mod: Take out the cat, replace with high flow cat (if the car's over 10 years old, this mod is allowed pretty much for any racing organization, in stock class), and fix the heat shield, "while I'm there" (but I'll be there for that damn heat shield in the first place)... Ahmet, where did you get your high flow cat? What kind is it? Is it still street legal where you live? What kind of performance difference did you notice?

Paid $100 for it, it's a universal cat, and not really intended for my car, or specially high performance...
However, it's made for a 5.9 liter engine, so I figure it's high ENOUGH flow for me... I'll get their web site for you by tomorrow... (it's not on the car yet either). BTW, I'm not sure I want to use it, as the rulebook for SCCA solo 2 states that your cat may only be replaced by a stock one, or oem (big bucks). +Mine has inlet/outlet sizes of 3 inches, so not sure if this is the best one to get, still need to research that...
