My S2 transmission has 130K on it and does not cause any serious troubles except my suspicion is it may start to do so pretty soon. The problem is when it gets hot approximately after 20 miles of average driving it starts to produce terrible noise and vibrates as everything inside is not tight enough. But it is pretty smooth when car is cold or it is freezing outside
It is filed with Castrol 85W90 gear oil. Another thing is that when the car decelerates from about 50-40 MPH to total stop it makes this horrible grinding sound from the transmission area and it does not matter if the car hot or not. Does it sound like time to change the transmission?, rebuild it (how?), replace only some important parts in it (bearings?, ring&pinion?, everything?) or forget about it... But how many more miles it still has on its age?

How do you know it is not a wheel bearing?

I do not know for sure what the problem is, but in the first case when the car is already hot and idling at neutral, I can hear clinking vibrating sound from the tranny, which I do not hear when the car is cold. In the second case, you may be right and... it is wheel bearings, but it does not grind when the car accelerates...

Torque tube bearings? Allthough, I'd think they'd make noises on acceleration also...
