I have an oil leak from the oil pan gasket in my 1986 944T. Looking at it it appears that the cross over pipe (exhaust inlet into the turbo) will have to come off as well as the cross member underneath the oil pan. Access to the exhaust bolts on the turbo looks pretty minimal. Any thoughts on what is required?

The March Panorama has piece on changing the pan gasket. There was some discussion on this list a week or so ago.

It might be a balance shaft seal leaking midpoint on the side of the engine. If you need to remove the pan then you will need a way to support the engine from above and work on it from underneath as the crossmember will need to be dropped also the cross over pipe will need to be removed 4 big nuts on the turbo side and 6 smaller ones on the exhaust side dont forget to remove the rear portion of the exhaust system. Also the waste gate will need to be removed, while you are in there do you need new engine mounts? do you want to shim up your waste gate? when you take the pan off remember that you must also remove the oil return line from the turbo and tilt the pan to the side slightly so the oil pickup wont cach on the inside of the oil pan baffles this is a plastic piece that keeps the oil in the pan if the pan feels like it is caught on something ,it is ! dont pry or you will break this plastic the pan will come off very easily once it clears the oil pickup. You will find that removing the front crossmember and letting it hang is OK remove the 4 main bolts (mark the location B4 you remove the bolts) and then remove the 4 smaller bolts that hold on the rear control arms mark these as well disconnect the steering shaft bolt and the power steering lines that are bolted to the body get a jack under the crossmember while you do all of this and remember that the engine is still being supported from the top with an engine hoist then undo your motor mounts and let the cross member come down this should give you enough room to do the pan thing. when raplacing the gasket use a small amount of RTV on each junction where the gasket is curved to fit around the engine web cap, also drain the oil first ...like i said if you are in doubt as too the motor mounts condition replace them at this time.. installation is the reverse of dissassembly.........good luck..Stan |

Excellent instructions Stan!
I'm about to do this myself, on a non turbo however... I'm planning to drop the crossmember totally on my car, instead of letting it hang, but I'm also replacing the control arms, and possibly bearings, so my job's a tad more involved then yours, but still easier since it's not a turbo. Any suggestions from anybody? Something to watch out for while I do this besides the mentioned? Thanks. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

Umm, why else am I choosing to unbolt the subframe totally? Maybe the fact that I'm REPLACING the subframe has something to do with it!
Sorry, I just came from a 600mile trip (to pick up some free parts! )...Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |
