crappy (american) cars and thier inept (female) owners; how I appreciate Porsches

That title is supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, so please don't casturate me, in-house feminists

My girlfriend's sister owns a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am GT. Walking by the car in their driveway (parked next to 2 Escalades, 2 Envoys, and my 944) 2 days ago, I notice that the front driver's side tire is practically flat. I look at the passenger side, and the rear tire is the same. Of course, I go and tell the girl (typical cheerleader/clubber type - I'm so glad that Jen isn't like her even though they look almost like twins), and her reply didn't surprise me in the least:

"Oh, really? I hadn't noticed."

2 days later, the car is still in the driveway, tires still nearly flat. Just out of curiousity I get my trusty tire gauge out of my glove box.

Front driver's tire: 10 PSI
Front Pass. tire: 20 PSI
Rear driver's tire: 20 PSI
Rear pass. tire: 10 PSI

Sure enough, the driver's door cites ideal tire pressure at 30 PSI. I think to myself, "how can ANYONE not realize that their tires are practically flat?" 10 PSI sounds fairly ridiculous for a car that is driven every day!!!

So I go into the house and ask her why she didn't put air in the tires yet. She doesn't know how to, the mother doesn't know how to, and the father is too busy. I grab her keys and decide to do the dumb... ahem... girl a favor.

Anyhow, I fill her tires to the correct pressure, check her oil (no shocker - it was a quart low) and drive the car to the nearest gas station. WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK! I can't believe that this is what passes for "sporty" from the Detroit manufacturers! The steering was vague - turn it a little and there is practically no change, turn it a little more and all of a sudden you're taking a 90degree turn. The brakes were spongy at best, and don't really do a good job of stopping the car, IMHO. The accelleration, while not what I would call slow, was very erratic. You had to stomp it into overdrive in order to do anything but saunter up the speedometer. Seriously, the only car I've ever driven that felt worse than this (not counting SUVs) has to be my dad's Buick Le Sabre.

This experience made me appreciate the level of drivability inherent in all Porsches all the more. Although I can't help thinking maybe I'm spoiled now? Will I never enjoy driving a "lesser" car again?!?

HAHA, I hear you totally on that one, I think I really am spoiled on porsches. I cant stand driving my mom's camry ( too slow) or my dads maxima ( can't handle) and of course not my reliant k car (POS). I am always so amazed at how crappy some peoples cars drive. It realy makes you wonder, have they ever driven anything semi-close to porsche like in their lives?

The local gas station near me has just installed an air system designed for blondes.
You pull up attach the air hose to the wheel, make sure the big digital letters read the desired pressure and it inflates the tyre then beeps when it gets there.
If you still can't do it just sit there look blonde and the guy inside will come out and do it for you.

Lol ok because of this i actually went and checked my tires... what did a find... a FLAT left rear tire. Needless to say, i now have a new tire I had problems with the tire, but i inflated it, let it sit for 2 days, no air loss so I put it back on the car, and it went flat again. oh well now i have a nice shiny new tire.

reading stories like this makes me recall a quote from perfecto951 that he left on another thread a few days ago:

"hah. i saw a Camaro with TR side vents on it today..... it made me feel good about not being an idiot."

profound words, these. to translate, just use the quote like this for all such applications:

"ha, I saw...(fill in story such as the one above here)... it made me feel good about not being an idiot."

make all royalty checks payable to perfecto (minus my cut, of course)
