What do you guys think the best Porsche out of all the models would be for between 10-15K? That is about all I will be able to muster up at this point and I would like your opinions.

For 15 you could find a turbo S, that's what I'd go for in terms of power. A 15k 968 might be a gamble.

"best" for what?
low-budget--you might try an earlier 944 or even 924 autocrossing--you might want to look at a 914 driving in comfort--maybe a 2001 996 or 928 s4 will fit the bill classic good looks--a '73 911 would look nice best waste of money--i'd opt for a 930 nice performance/value--a 951 would do nicely don't like pop-up lights--a 968 a must nostalgia--maybe a 356 feel like suicide--the 550 is your best bet [This message has been edited by Blackfoot (edited 04-16-2001).] |

Don't bother with the turbo S - its extra money for components you'll replace anyway. Don't bother with the 968 either if you want HP like your Z28. Speaking of which I ran a 98? Z28 today - he kept up decently until third gear - but I was only running 10 psi lol. Get a 951 and don't look back. You'll get an easy 350hp with turbo and MAF. Further, the car will handle well and be lighter than the Z28.

Go with a 951. It has the most "bang for the buck" going with Porsche. Next most likely, but costly, 88 or later 928S. Add supercharger and nitrous and hang on. (Both to the steering wheel and the wallet!) Nothing anywhere quite like these models.

Yea I guess a 951 would be your best bet then. Hey blackfoot, the 968 does have popup lights.

I think it's styling does, on the coupe at least. It looks a lot meaner than the 944, and a lot more refined. It's similar to a 944 s2.

You won't find a nice 968 in that price range..count on spending $20k...The 951 is definately a good choice...you can get a REAL NICE one in that price range....and don't rule out(YES GUYS, THERE IS SUCH A CAR) A 911...You can get a mid 80's 911 in that price range....I would be looking at 951's & 911's....Those are your best bang...good luck!....Cus

From this message board and other research I have done so far, It appears I will probably be looking into a 951 or a 911. Thanks again guys for all your help. How much would the turbo and MAF mods cost me to get the 350 horses that wolfrpi was talking about? What kind of reliability do these cars have? Will I be able to make long drive without opening my tool box or calling a tow truck?

The maintenance costs of a 951 are higher than a 944 n/a. I would think you can get a really decent 944 S2 for around $10k. It's got 211hp, and can also be modified for more ponies, but not as much as a turbo, of course. Plus there's no turbo lag, and that's important when running autox. (DE and track's a different story: the 951's more suited for that, IMO!)
You won't get as much bang for the buck as a 951, but there's nothing wrong with an n/a, espeically when you're over 200 hp without a turbo! Just my $0.42. -Z. |
