944S timing belt very, VERY tight
I'm installing a new timing belt on my 944S and the dang thing is so tight I can't even get it on. I've heard the 16 valve cars timing belt is tighter than the 8 valve but man, I've been working at this for three days now!!! The new belt has the same part # as the old belt, same number of teeth, it's just about 1/4 of an inch shorter than the old one which I assume is because the old one stretched. How are you 16 valve guys getting this belt on?!!!

Take the locking nut and washer off the tensioner (the M8 Nyloc) and the tensioner will move back far enough.

You didn't damage the belt by using tools on it in your three days of travail, did you?

If you didnt know about the lock nut you may want to get some help setting up the tension on the belt. Its not worth risking all those valves. Good luck

hey Flormat, I didn't think there was anyone else from MI in here. I live north of Grand rapids. I had an 87 S several tears ago, now have a 87 8 valve.

no damage to the belt- just my hands, and it wasn't 3 days straight. More like a few hours here and there over the course of three days. I didn't end up adjusting the tensioner, I removed a roller which did not appear to be putting tension on the belt but apparently was. Thanks everyone!
