Red face

man, what is it with people these days? i am an easy going guy 99.9% of the time and i can slough off 99.9% of things that happen. i'm an anti-stress kind of individual.

but...

when people hit my car, they get a verbal pummeling that makes Marine drill instructors seem like kindergarten teachers. i learned this little tip in college: if you ever get into a verbal confrontation, you must do anything in your power to be the one in charge of the situation. NEVER let the other person get the upper hand. if they falter, then capitalize on their mistake.

a long time ago, a girl was not looking where she was driving and she totalled my Nissan. she was trying to say that it was my fault (despite the fact that she didn't yeild right of way, she didn't have turn signal on, it was not her car, she wasn't following the traffic signs, etc)

when she hit the car, i said "Get over there" and pointed to a parking space. she was about 18 years old and i said in a very stern voice:

"Don't you even THINK about going anywhere because i'm taking down all your information, then i'm calling them Police, and i'm calling my insurance agent." i had to put the scare into her because we had an incident in which a person hit our Nissan and then tried to drive away. they ended up getting into a car chase with the Police.

in the end, i hope you get your car repaired, and i hope that hid doesn't get behind a wheel until he learns how to drive.

and YES, if i was the idiot that did it, i'd be just as guilty too. i'm a firm believer in people taking their punishment when they do something wrong, even if it's me.

Sue him for punitive damages too and for the sake of us Porsche drivers to warn those out there not to hit our cars again.

Sorry to hear that! I think there should be a sticker, or a special license plate that designates an inexperienced driver, so we can look out for them. All of us here take pride in our cars, and worked hard for them. When we get nailed by an inexperienced driver, it is usually by someone who's mommy and daddy bought them the car, and will take care of them.

Yeah a sticker would have been nice. Though it wouldnt have help in this case. I didnt even know he was back there until i heard the tires squeeling. I had just enough time to get off the breaks before impact.

Update though i finally got an estimate from the body shop. $2700 for the body work. Plus whatever the exhause system is going to cost. and any mechanical damage. (god i hope he didnt mess-up the tranny).

And it will all take at least 3 weeks to finish. So i'm stuck with some stinking Chevy Cavelier rental car until then.

BUt i'm still going autocrossing this Sunday .

Autocrossing in a cavilier? why not, that's what you're "supposed" to do with a rental car! Beat the piss out of it.

when our red 85.5 got hit in the front. The opposing party's insurance covered a rental car. I stated very firmly that it was a porsche that was damaged, that it was their driver at fault and that I would not be driving a lesser car as a rental. (they had offered a Grand Am) after some firm words, my rental was upgraded to a Camero convert... The point is, push for a better rental car.

and then drive the piss out of it...

(was in the rental for over a month. first the paint didnt match, then the insulation under the hood was damaged when they pulled the hood for paint... after about 6 monthe I went back again because the paint was cracking on the lower airdam area. They forgot to put a flex agent into the paint.)

Tranny damage, yes, you just don't see it yet. Look for movement of the torque tube up by the clutch. Also watch out for the hinge attach area for the rear window.

what color is your car?

some of you stated that you would like "inexperianced" drivers to have some sort of sticker or something so you can identify them ... well here in British Columbia, Canada ... they have exactly that ... and right now i'am one of them .. they make you put this bright green N on your car for the first 1 and a half years after you get your license .. they you have to go in for another test (which they charge you for ) so you can get rid of your N .. i'll tell you this ... it doesn't help ... how are you going to react differently to someone with a N on their car than to someone who doesn't?? what about people over 70 that are still driveing .. (i personally know a large number who are very unsafe drivers) ... all that have the N's does is allows other drivers to descriminate against you .. also .. if you don't have your N on your car ... you get a fairly large fine .. i've had my license for 2 and a half years now .. i still havn't got around to getting rid of my N becuase i have no money ..... so does having this N on my car make me a bad driver that other people should watch out for?? ... why not extend this even farther .. when a person gets a predetermined number of points on their drivers license they are required to have some sort of sticker on their car ... personally i think the entire idea is a pointless waste of time and money..

Sorry, I still stand in my opinion of a way to identify an inexperienced driver. I got to watch a 16 year old girl total her brand new Camaro today. She pulled right out in front of a moving van. I was the car right behind the moving van and got to see the whole thing. Thank God it was on a side street, in a 30 MPH zone, and no one was hurt.

Now before anyone gets offended, I'm not saying that all teenagers are bad drivers.

I also think that everyone 60 and over, should have to take a test every year to get their license renewed. I stood behind a VERY old woman at the DMV who got to take her vision exam 10 times! She never did pass it, and they gave her a license anyway!

if you knew she was inexperianced ... how would that have changed how you reacted to the situation? from the sounds of things she didn't spend enough time in driving school ... not to mention from the sounds of things the moving van wouldn't have known she was inexperianced anyways (with the laws in place here at any rate) becuase the N is on the rear of the car ... from the sounds of things you should be asking for TOUGHER driving exams so that LESS bad drivers get on the road in the first place ... make the kids get the experiance before they are allowed to drive by themselves. instead of labeling them and letting them loose on the street ...

The driving exams here in FL are completely ridiculous. The exam is around 5 minutes and at a lot of places you don't even go out on the road. I think that instead of having a learners permit and then a license there should be degrees to the learners permit. I know things vary per state, but here in FL a big part of the test is turning the headlights on. I consider myself a good driver and have been complimented on my driving skills. But I know a lot of kids who have licenses and shouldn't. The fact is the a lot of states are failing us. Some kids shouldn't have licenses and some older folks shouldn't either. But there just isn't enough they can do really. With all the soccer moms out there driving their 15 foot long SUV driving 90 in a 40, the kids who aren't so great in their honda's are less of a concern. Almost every time I have nearly been in an accident the soccer mom was to blame for driving too fast or not clearing me when they tried to change lanes. FL is notorious for it's traffic and it's udnerstandable.

Hey, I think that's a great idea! I BIG florescent PINK 'I' sticker: for IDIOT driver! For all people who are just under the quota of points required to loose one's license! No age/experience discrimination here: if you're a stupid driver, no matter what, people should know about it. I know it sounds kinda midevil, but why not make a mockery out of dumb drivers? Why not give good drivers a little warning?

Personally, I feel that stupid drivers give the NRA a good name...

Although I agree with the comment, stupid drivers give NRA a good name, I couldn't disagree more with the assumption that any driver with points on his license is an idiot, a dangerous or stupid person.

You see everything illegal is not dangerous, OR stupid. Take making a left onto a one way street on red for example, or doing doughnuts in empty parking lots, etc.

I agree with Ahmet. The idea of putting ANY sort of sticker on my car to symboize a bad driver because I'm A: Young, or B: have bad points or C: Any other reason I can think of is what is ludicrous.

I'm sorry, I'm against almost every other person out there when I say, Driving is a RIGHT not a PRIVELAGE.

Hey Minhiriath where abouts in BC are you? I'm in Abbotford. As for the N, there is the red "L" that is issued for the Learner's licence before the "N" novice is given. It allows others on the road to be more careful and give the newer drivers some extra room incase any mistakes are made. And if you are a "N" driver without showing your sticker, you can be ticketed for that.

Stupidity behind the wheel transcends all ages, races and genders. My in-laws live in FLA and there are truly nice old people who have retired to the state that have no business whatsoever behind the wheel. NC isn't much better IMO. My mom just got her license renewed 4 days after having cataracts removed (she took the eye test without glasses and passed!!)

Since I've started driving the 951 every day, I've noticed that people frequently mess with me while going down the highway, ie. tailgate, cut over too close etc. I had one this afternoon tailgate for 10 miles at 75+ mph at less than two (yes 2) car lengths. Traffic was flying this afternoon and I think she was trying to help me go a little faster (as if I needed it). It's a good thing for both of us that she didn't get to find out just how quickly a 951 can stop. And while I'm at it-- cell phones-- HANG UP AND DRIVE!! My aunt was killed recently by a soccer mom in an SUV doing about 70 in a 35 with a cell phone in her ear while running a red light. At least she was dead on the scene and didn't suffer much if she even knew what hit her. My dad was driving my mom to the dentist and passed the wreck while the crews were working on her, fortunately, her car was so mangled that neither recognized it. For all you guys out there who insist on street racing-- that's why I have a real problem with it. At some point the odds are pretty good that you WILL KILL or SEVERLY INJURE someone.

Moral of the story, drive safely, always assume that the other guy is a stupid idiot out to get you, never ever trust a turn signal when pulling out, always check traffic even if you have the green light, the most dangerous thing on the road is a blue hair midget looking under the steering wheel of a Buick.
