Exclamation NITROUS ON A NA!!!!!!

wHAT WOULD YOU HAVE TO UPGRADE TO USE NITROUS SYSTEM. I figuired the fuel pump, but what else. This is with a system that uses a button and is NOT constantly forcing nitrous. what do you recommend? Just curious.

If you get the kit from NOS it comes with a "quick shot" secondary fuel pump that comes on when you inject the nitrous. Be carefule with this upgrade, among ither things it's known to cause pitting on top of the pistons.

I'm sorry i couldn't help myself, i just had to post this picture regarding NOS. Philosophically, there is irony between this picture and adding NOS to a 944 NA.

BE CAREFUL!!!!!!

Question

ScottR,
Since you seem to be the expert (via experience) in the area of Nitrous on the 944 NA, can you tell me -- would there be a problem running nitrous without the O2 sensor?? i.e. a test pipe, or with the sensor just plain unplugged...Mine has been cut since I bought the car (it runs great). I assume it went bad, and instead of replacing it the last guy just cut it. Also, can anyone tell me if the car runs better any particular way -- i mean with sensor or without (open vs closed loop). On my 85 735i for example, the car runs better with it unplugged! I experience very annoying hesitation problems when its plugged it -- and this is a common problem with those cars. I m just wondering if the 944 has any similar problems, because I have no experience with a properly working O2 in the car! THe engine mngt systems are very similar between the 2 cars, thats why I was wondering. ANYONE??

I don't think that the O2 sensor cares, you will only be able to use the NOS for a few seconds and only at high RPMS anyway. It's not like you are driving around with it on all the time, you will deplete the bottle faster then you think. As for not having the sensor hooked up, maybe someone else has some experience with it. I would think you would want it hooked up to insure that you were running at optimal conditions throughout driving.

NOS is safe to use with oxygen sensors.

It picks up on the OXYGEN level in the exaust, and nitrous OXIDE is (partially)picked up as well. The oxygen sensor SHOULD be left on there, as it'll help the DME fine tune the mixture on the go.

Check out the post from Feb 11 about my nitrous install. You can search for "nitrous" to find it. There are pics there too. It was a very simple install.

I did it on my 84 and used the NOS dry kit (#5023 I think), so no additional fuel pump needed. The dry kit applies 50 psi to your fpr when engaged, so the stock fuel injectors provide the extra fuel. It works well but only for small power increases. If you want anything more than an additional 80hp, you should go with a wet kit and dedicted fuel pump.

I used the 60hp jet at it was great! It only kicks in at wide open throttle, so your O2 sensor is in closed loop at that point anhd it doesn't do anything for the mixture. The only thing a disconnected O2 sensor will do is possibly make you fail emissions inspection, if your state does that.

Do the following things and you'll be fine:

1) adjust your DME to the full rich position
2) use spark plugs one heat range colder (and NOT platinum plugs)
3) use 93 octane gas
4) limit yourself to the 75hp jet MAX.

Most cars don't use the oxygen sensor when at Wide open throttle. So, as long as you don't inject the nitrous during part throttle (why would you), it doesn't matter one bit. The engine computer sees exactly the same inputs at WOT with nitrous on or off!
