I think that my passenger side CV joint gave up yesterday on my 1986 951.
1)Are CV joints all the same on 944's (1983-1985.5, 1985.5-1991, Turbo or not)? 2)Is there a way to grease them to prolong their life, even if they started their mythical clunking noise? 3)Are they rebuildable? 4)I'm going to change them with a good frien of mine, who knows alot about mechanic: approximatively how much time will it require? Thanks alot guys, if you have any other informoation concerning CV joints problem, feel free to let me know about this!

Check this:

Have any of you heard about using 930 CV on the 944 shafts? Apperently the 930 units are nearly indestructable or at least much stronger. Any ideas if this modification has been done and works?

Ho, and approximatively how many kilometers can I run on a worn CV joint without damaging the transaxle? The joint began to do very very very low clunks yesterday...

You should rotate your CV Joints around 90K. You'll get near doulbe the life out of them from what I hear. The CV Joints are not big deal to change out.

hoff, that's a good point...The inners get the majority of the wear...Both ends are the same, so you should remove them and rotate the inner to the outer(just flip the shaft and reinstall)...Install new bolts whenever you rotate or replace....Now, Yan, the first question is...Is the rubber boot split?...If so, it may be clunking because it is dry(and worn)...A quick fix is to go to your local auto parts store & get a tube of CV joint grease....get up under the car and force that CV grease into the joint...that is...if the boot is, indeed, split and you can push it back to do this....When I did this, I cut a bicycle tube open, wrapped it around the open boot, and ziptied it in place until I could get it replaced...Within 2 blocks from the house, the clunking went away...I drove it like that for a over a week until my joints came in and I could get it to the mechanic...Don't just replace one...Replace both inners...the outers are probably ok...and always keep an eye on the boots..if they ever split, replace them immediately..Good Luck!....Cus
