Steering Column Replacement
I just bought a '88 944 that needs the steering coulumn replaced due to the ignition lock being smashed out of it. Has any one ever replaced their column before? Do you have to remove the entire dash, since the opening the column comes out through isn't large enough for the column/ignition assembly to fit out? Or is there another way? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Just read your post black.
Have you successfully removed it yet? DO you have the replacement to show you where and how the bolts are mounting--holding--it to the body of the car? Let me know......I have this part |
I've got the factory repair manual, and I need to take it out of my car soon since it seems to be broken. Hopefully by the afternoon.

Thanks for your replies. I changed it Sunday afternoon. The tech manual that I have didn't cover column removal and I wanted to do it without removing the whole dash. I ended up removing the trim and switches around the column then I drilled out the factory 'pop' rivets and tach welds in the piece of metal between the column and ignition switch. Then I folded the metal strip up out of the way and slid the whole column up and out through the enlarged whole. After the new column was slid back in place I straightened out the metal and put in new rivets. I know some may frown upon "hacking" up their car in such a way but it was a lot less of a headache than removing the whole dash, and once the trim is back on no one knows. Thanks again for your quick responses! Tracy J.
