gas mileage

I get 400+miles per tank, but i was wondering what i could do to improve this. (Besides my driving) are there any adjustments you can make that will take away some power, but increase gas mileage?

Man, you're complaining about 400+ miles!!! I get about 200 miles after a gizillion adjustments and tune ups in my 84 944 ... I'm the one who should be asking what to do about bad gas milage ...

Well- on the interstate without foot in firewall driving, I get 30, in town 26-27. That works out overall to about 400 miles per tank. You're probably ok.

pschaars951, removing the cat may marginally increase gas milage.

400 miles per tank isn't bad, a mass air flow kit should increase gas milage, if calibrated for that. Decreasing inlet air temperatures will also have the same effect.

Call automotion, and ask them to burn you a chip for the most gas milage possible, that'll probably help more than anything (I wouldn't really want ANYBODY to do that, but...).

My 951 gives me an average of about 23mpg, 19mpg around town.
So I get around 380 miles per tank (16 UK gals, 75 litre tank)

last week I put in 17 gallons, and got 300 miles. But it's like that every time! I have a bad o2 sensor , but I don't think that's the only reason for it. Any ideas??

So I get about 12 to 15 MPG at best in my 84 944 ... is that because it is not a 951 ... or is something really wrong??

I have a new O2 sensor, and the MAF was tuned by a specialist who ran complete diagnostics on the car ... could it be the CAT and muffler? Injectors? or the fact that my alternator is old? HELP

with very few exceptions, whatever increases HP decreases fuel economy. think backwards from what you did to improve HP and you will get better mileage.

Unplug your #2 and #4 fuel injectors If you're only running two cylinders you'll get twice the gas mileage

I just checked mine this afternoon, 26.5 with a mix of highway, city , and "enthusiastic motoring." The air was off since the weather here has been ok, and the mileage would have been better had there not been the motoring excursion through some twistys. When I abstain from that, the average is 27-28. Straight up highway with AC, 30.

I get about 23-24 around town but I live in a small town so it is not city driving. On the highway, I get 28-31. This is a 951 with MAF. This means keeping my foot off the floorboard....

BTW, am installing a high power ignition system that is supposed to improve everything. We shall see next week when I go to Nashville and back, about 600 miles.

So it seems like I'm the only one getting such bad milage!!!! Ahmet ... you have the same car ... what do you get?

I didn't do any mods to improve performance, everything in the car is pretty much stock .. what could be the culprit?

I would really appreciate any help.

It could be the O2 sensor. An occasinal bad one does come from the factory or if it was spliced in it could be a bad splice.

Have you checked for a fuel leak? Bad gas cap.

I just replaced the O2 sensor recently, and tested it with a voltmeter, and it was working fine.

I do smell some fuel when the tank is full, but it is not overwhelming ... the tank cap looks ok, but I'm not sure if it leaks or not.

When I drive the car, I watch the MPG meter closely, it is around 40 at idle, at first gear it shoots all the way to the black zone (under 10MPG), on 2nd gear, it shoots to 10, then on 3rd and 4th it is between 15 and 20 when accelerating, and between 20 and 30 while cruising ... I'm really curious as to how other 944s behave!! Someone told me their meter shoots to 20 when accelerating ... by that account, my DME is giving too much gas to the engine, right?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, the last resort that I haven't tinkered with yet is the MAF, where I can lean out the mixture.

How do you check if the fuel pressure regulator and damper are working properly?

To check the pressure regulator connect a fuel pressure guage then start the car and let it idle, check the fuel pressure then disconnect the vacuum line to the regulator the fuel pressure should increase.

I don't know about the dampner.

I wouldnt buy a chip from automotion, They get tem from Autothority anyway. Try Windward they can get them and wont charge you the extra 100 bucks.
