Power steering rebuild kit? Need help desperately!

I really don't feel like paying Performance Products 750 bucks to rebuild my power steering rack when I KNOW it can be done for much, much cheaper.

Does anyone know of a rebuild kit that is availabe, or a reputable shop in Washington or Idaho that deals in power steering rebuids?

The car is a 1987 Porsche 944S that I use as a daily driver (so its technically my beater car) and I need it to be working properly! My 928 is leaking power steering fluid also (I think it's just a hose on that car though) but I can't afford to pay 700 bucks right now, meaning the car will just be sitting or driven as it is, which probably isn't a good idea.

Please help me!

Hi Oliver look into the magazine Excellence you will find many places that sell rebuilt racks for about 250 or so... you can find the magazine at a Barnes and Noble........
Also to consider is flushing the power steering pump a few times and cleaning the tank,,, use fresh Dextron 2 or 3......good luck and spend some time on the 928, it may be a pain to work on but if you drive it with a low or no power steering fluid then you will need a new pump......Stan

Advance Auto, Autozone, PepBoys all can get, or carry rebuilt Steering Racks for very reasonable prices, and from Advance, I got a lifetime warranty (86 944na)working well and no leaks for more than a year now.

You should get a rebuilt one. They are a nightmare to rebuild at home. You have to first get itsealed correctly, then get the spool vavle adjusted right. Just get a rebuilt.

Before you spend the money make sure that you have the correct fluid.
Mine was foaming and leaking until I flushed and refilled with Dexron III.
Problem now seems to be solved.
I did have a price for a rebuilt unit of CAD 450 from our local Canadian Tire store.

Oliver, I am having the same problem with my power steering rack. My car is 88' 944s and it's the only car I got. What I did so far was to get a used steering rack from either ebay or porsche classfied ad(Like this bbs board). It's very cheap to buy a used one, regardless of the condition. Therefore you will have 2 sets of the rack. You may rebuild the rack yourself and still able to drive the car to school or work. By the way, I am also trying to locate the rebuild kit. Please post if you found it. I will do the same. Good luck for both of us...

Hope this will help.

No luck on the rebuild kit yet. But the advertisers in Excellence do seem to sell them for 250 bucks, with a warranty! I'm going to go check out Pepboys and such later this week, I'll post what I find.
