Window regulator

When I roll my driver side window up or down, it hesitates about two inches from the top, then it goes the rest of the way down or up. I took my door panel off today and looked at the mechanism under operation. The gear of the window regulator is missing some teeth. So, do I need a whole new regulator? I don't really want to buy a new one because of how much they cost. On the other hand, I don't want to buy a used one if the same thing is gonna happen to it soon. What do you guys suggest?

Yes you need an entire regulator, minus the motor since from what you are saying it works fine.

Buy a used one, you can buy many used ones for the price of a new one and they are not hard to replace.

I would hop on that $15 offer asap--I bought one for $30 last month and it was the best deal I found. I had to replace the regulator on my '83 944 after the metal mounting broke under stress. The job wasn't too difficult (though Haynes disagrees) but it did take some time. It definitely helps to have a helper to align the window in the regulator channels.

The biggest hassle I ran into was a stripped screw that attaches the motor to the regulator. Took me about an hour to finally drill the damn thing out! I also suggest that you take apart the motor to pull the regulator out through the hole in the door frame. It almost looks like it won't fit out, but with some jiggling and scraped knuckles it will make it out!

In the end all the work was well worth it--the window now operates much faster and it makes a tighter seal on the door frame. Check out this post for some other tips:

Thanks for the help guys. I'll probably need some help replacing it when I get it seein'as how I don't have a Haynes manual. When they make a manual for the 16 valve models I'll buy one. Anyway, Alan, I'll probably take you up on that offer. I need the driver side one. What kind of condition is your regulator in? How much would shipping be to Saint Louis, 63129?

I would recommend going to Pep Boys or something like that and buy the Haynes manual for the 83-89 944's anyway. There is a lot of stuff that is the same for the S2 and the 8v's. It WILL help you. Unless you are doing engine work much of the info is the same as far as basics go. I will let you know about the 944 S2 intake systme when I find out the deal.
