When i hit that little button with the snow flake on it the thing comes on at full blast. Is it supposed to do that? I know the air condiioner doesn't work so its blowing hot air into the car, but its blowing it as if i would have the fan knob at 4.

Also the right knob with the temperture doesn't work.

how much could it cost to redo the ac?

You may (I stess may) need a new climate control module. It includes both knobs, the sliders, recirc, defrost, and the a/c button. I don't know how much it costs. Ians Europarts has them new in the box.

You will have to give us more to go on if you want some kind of explanation. Not nearly enough info. There is a lot of stuff going on in the climate control so no one answer is going to suffice.

Normally, given that the temperature setting is set to cool, then the compressor comes on. But the fan power is still controlled by the fan switch. The above post is probably correct. Sounds like a broken climate panel. Expensive part.

second, air conditioner pretty much not working, i'm guessing its completely dead, i know some of you guys changed to new better AC systems, what kinda and how much?

There are some things you need to check first, you need to know if there is power going to the A/C clutch when the switch is pressed. This checks for a good working relay and a working dash switch. If you have power and the compressor is not spinning then the clutch is shot. If there is no power you will need to bypass the pressure check valve to get power to the clutch. If that works then you do not have enough charge in the system. If you do all this and still no power check the A/C relay. In your case it's going to be hard to do any of this with a suspect broken climate panel.

Before you buy a new climate unit, is the heat and defrost working ok i.e., the heater will maintain the temperature selected, blower works on different speeds, defroster works, & air distribution levers work properly?

Something does sound screwy that when you hit snowflake, the blower defaults to high. But, if the heater works, you might just be low on freon and you might get the a/c working by charging, albeit with two settings: off and blizzard.

Just bypasing the switch will not tell you if your compressor clutch is bad, if your ground is not good. The A/C compressor in my car was not working and it turned out to be a bad ground. The compressor is not completley shielded from below and is subject to the road. Like said earlier, is the rest of the cooling system working properly? In my vehicle hitting the button with the defrost pic on it completley bypasses my fan control and puts the fan on full blast, as it was designed to do. Hitting the snowflake however does not. Check out all the other possibilities, and how the rest of the system is operating before spending alot of money.

Ok after work today i went driving, this was about 10:00 PM, i drove around for maybe 20-30 minutes, then i started to feel hot air coming from my vents, more at my feet than the ones on the dash. THe ones on the dash were hot though. It wasn't BLOWING air, it was just kinda coming out VERY slow but the vents were pretty hot.

The guy i bought the car from said the water remp gauge doesn't work.

Is my car overheating?what the hell is going on?

Most definatly take a look at the clip. No doubt having adjusted the temp control several times trying to work the AC problem, this marginal part has now failed. Its a simple fix and has been described here several times... Do a search on subjects like "hot air" etc.


you will aslo need to get going with the temp gauge problem. Running hot will kill these cars and without a working gauge, who knows. IMOP, before you start with the AC, I'd get this fixed first.

This is too intense for me. I'm going to take it to a mechanic and dish out like 2 grand, but whatever, its what i get for not knowing anything, but i will learn hopefully
