Post 944 Rattling Noise

Hi All!

I have a 944 that makes a strange rattling sound in the rear. It happens more frequently when it's cold. I brought it to my local gas station where I get the oil changed and they couldn't figure out what it was. I'd like to try to fix it myself because I know that these repairs can get kind of pricey. Does anyone have any advice as to what could be causing this noise and how I can fix it? Also, is there a cheap place to get used seats in good condition? The seats I currently have are a rather unattractive plaid pattern. I would appreciate any advice!
Thanks!
Tori 1988/944

possibly exhaust shield or hanger. is your car a turbo? like, a turboS? a limited edition silver rose turboS? if so i would advise to hang on to those funky plaid seats.

My mechanic said that it could be the exhaust but he wasn't sure because the noises are coming from the hatch area. If the exhaust is from the aftermarket would it be more likely to give me problems? I think it's made out of chrome. If it is the hatch, how do I fix that?
The car is silver and says turbo s on the back. Will it be harder to get parts to fix it if it's a limited edition? Thanks again!-Tori

Tori, my 944 makes a rattling noise also sorta in the rear or under the drivers seat. It happens on startup just after the motor starts for just a couple seconds and then quits. Is that what your does?

Tori, so you have those gray and white plaid seats too? Since my driver side has a 3 inch dia. hole in the bolster, and its starting to tear on the lower seat as well, I just ordered some charcoal sheepskins from Rocky mountain Sheepskin. I'll let everyone know how well they fit and match teh rest of the interior (though I've been assured they fit perfectly). I ordered the CustomFit ones for $119 ea.

You quickly find on these boards and in the classifieds that seats don't come cheap ($800), and even if you find a pair, they likely need re-upholstering.

For parts, there are several recyclers; partsheaven.com,(CA.), oklahomaforeign.com,(OK), and closer to home,, stuttgartthaus.com(NC). I've gotten a good price on a used carpet set from PartsHeaven.

As for that intermittant rattle, try and get several ears to pin point that rattle.

Hana pa'a (good luck) and aloha, Neal

Oh, and ignore Mideast's inquiry. He's this site's provocateur and besides, everyone on this board that does'nt have one, lusts for the 944 turbo. Aloha again-N

My 84'944 occasionally has a rattle from the rear hatch as well. I guess we could all colaborate on an idea or two, but it is a 17 year old car that has been taken to an extreme or two. It happens only when the idle is rough (coldstart or really hot temps), so I think a new Aux Air Regulator may be my solution, otherwise it would take a genious to fix all the rattling we will run into in the life of our great cars, not to mention a pretty penny. But all things considering, I understand where you come from..., it's a Porche and it is rather bothersome to have any strange uneccesary noises present. Let us know if you find out how to stop it, and good luck!!! Ciao

The noise could be the rear window glass ,that is coming loose from the molding . This is very common problem , just try to seal it with black silicon (top edge corners) . Do not try to remove the complete window , read pain in the ass .

I had a rattle in the back of my car that was hard to find. I had someone push up and down on the back end as I felt around on the suspension. The rear shock was bad but you could not tell until you worked the suspension. The shock looked good and felt tight but was bad.
