Just had the engine mounts replaced on my car and the shop told me that the DME relay was bad because it kept stalling intermittely (never happened with me). What the heck -- they charged me $40 for the part and didn't charge me for labor. Well, 2 days later (yesterday) car wouldn't start while doing errands around town. Don't hear the starter even turning over. Please help -- starter or some other problem?

Checked the fuses -- they are good. You have to forgive me -- I am really pretty much anovice, so don't know where the starter is. Other pieces of information -- when the car is on, all the guages look good -- battery charged, etc. Car can be started by compression starting and will then run until it is turned off and won't start back up again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check the starter solenoid. Most parts stores can do that for you for free.

I can have it tested, but don't know where to begin to remove it and take it somewhere. I have the Haynes manual, but I need something more specific than that (I am a woman and just didn't figure I'd have to deal with this). Could someone give me specific instructions on how to do this? I changed the sparrk plugs, distributor cap, rotor and spark plug wires after I bought the car, so I'm not totally Porsche dead! Thanks!

Someone just mentioned to me that pehaps the alarm has disabled the system -- I just bought the car 3 months ago and didn't know there was an alarm. I looked under the hood and there is something that looks like an alarm horn next to the battery. Could this be the problem and how do I check it? Thanks for any help -- the car is down right now!

If you can start it every time by compression starting it, then I doubt that the alarm is the problem. The reason why that shop didn't charge you labor for the DME relay is because it takes about two seconds to change. That shop may have knocked something lose on your starter when they were doing your motor mounts. If you can get it back to them, they might be willing to at least look under the car at the starter for you for free since it's possible that it's their fault. If the battery is fine, and the car runs fine when compression started, and all of the fuses are fine, and the starter doesn't even operate when the key is turned, then I would think that somehow the starter motor isn't getting electric current. I would think it's the starter motor, the starter solenoid, the starter switch, disconnected wires, or something along those lines.
