what is wrong

I have an 83 844

it sometimes has trouble starting feels like it is not getting gas. If I let it sit for 5 or 10 min it will start fine. This has been happening more frequently lately. could it be a fule pump if so what is nessessary to replace it?

When was the last time you replaced your fuel filter?

Could also be the reference and speed sensors. Been a rash of these lately breaking their wires inside the connectors or the plastic heads.

Please put your car and year in your signiture line.

DME relay... stops flow of fuel when it dies... intermittently

bulachip 11-04-2003 04:34 PM

so perhaps a dme relay or fuel filter. Are either of these things something that i could fix myself I have no mechinacal experience beyond changing my oil and fooling around with two cycles

All you need is a jack, jack stand, and wrenches (17mm and 19mm?) to change your fuel filter. All you need to change your dme relay is nimble fingers and your owners manual.

And it's location on the fuse/relay panel under the left side of the dash.

how much would they cost which should i do first?

ae1969 11-04-2003 08:40 PM

Do the DME relay first..... check the date stamped on it. If its older than 5 years more than likely you will need to replace.

The fuel filter can be a PITA to replace unless you enjoy getting covered in gas.

Now you mention 5-10 minutes you wait and then it starts............is this on cold starts or hot starts???

bulachip 11-04-2003 09:23 PM

cold starts

bulachip 11-04-2003 09:24 PM

but on warm days i have not driven the car since summer but I am trying to get this thing fixed during the winter so I can enjoy her during the summer

so you guys are pretty sure that it is not the actual fule pump itself

that is good news

Not if you can jumper it and get it to run.
