should both fans run ?
when everyting is pluged in, only the driver side fan runs when it gets hot , If i wire the pasanger fan to the battery it runs normal temp and the driverside fan never comes on . Should the passanger side fan run all the time and only the driverside for a/c and extream temps or ?

Both the funs should run and stop at the same time. They are controlled by a controll unit which has separate relay for each fan. In your case the control unit may not be working properly. I am not 100% sure but I think also there is a fuse for each fan in which case you may be lucky and replacing the relevant fuse will sort your problem.

I fuses look good ! Thank you for the idea now i just have to look for the controll unit (relay)? or if i can even get my hand in there while laying upside down holding a flashlight , dont you love this car?

There are some differences between the early and late model cars, but for all practial purposes the fans are the same.
First off, BOTH fans should run when the ignition is on and the radiator is "hot." Second, ONE fan (driver side) should run at low speed when the ignition is OFF and the radiator is "hot". Third, BOTH fans (late model) should cycle between low and high speed when the A/C is on. For an early car both fans run at high speed when the A/C is on. |
the driver fan does run in slow speed. I think it may be the A/C relay but and having trouble finding it . I hear it may be behind the glove box or to the side ? I know it is not the III spot like the relay map shows!

I found the relay it is behind the kick panel in the passanger side but it cheaks out my number 6 fuse keeps blowing any ideas where to look?

driver's fan runs from thermal switch in driver's side radiator tank for low speed operation via fuse 5
high speed operation of driver's fan is controlled via a thermal switch in AC circuit which closed a relay; AC does not have to be on for this to happen. This circuit also runs passenger side fan in high speed. An AC control relay also closes when AC is on and operates passenger fan in high speed regardless of temp Based on my observations of my car, transition form low to high speed in driver's fan is very brief on a temp rise. You can verify low speed operation as car cools down when both fans running. Driver's side will switch to low speed prior to shut-off. So basically you have 3 sequenced, pararell circuits running fans. (clever but complicated) For high speed operation of either you need both a good AC relay & a fan relay. Fuse 5 is for slow speed, driver's , fuse 6 is for high speed, both. hope this helps |
Thanks guys I still have not found the problem must be a short somewhere but I did wire the pass fan to run with the key in and it passed smog this way so now I have alot of time to play around with it
