Anyone done a convertible conversion ???

Just wondering if anyone has done a convertible conversion on a 944.
I have heard of shops doing them on other vehicles.

Pro's / Con's ????????

there was a really ugly one on ebay at one point, I don't think it could be done cheaply and look good at the same time, why not just buy a 944 cab?

Don,

with all due respect to anyone here and ducking head to avoid being toasted.

DO NOT buy a car which has been choped, DO NOT attempt to Chop a 44.

There is a hell of a lot of work which has gone into a 44 cab. If you have not seen one, I would actuall have a look at one.

I dont know how many people ask this question and think they can get away with taking a buzz saw to a porsche.

heres a few items, you'd need to change, (and thats only the bits I've found out so there may be more)

1> The windscreen is shorte by 2.5" and raked back about 3deg,s it also acts as a roll bar and is strengthened.

2> The doors are different, there is a quarter window and an upright which also acts as a support and strengthener

3> There is additionalk body stiffeners welded into the main chassis

4> There is a second bodyskin, which also gives access to other parts of the car

5> There is a body damper in the rear of the car in one of the wheel wells

6> the roof assy/motors/wiring and electrical conections both to the DME, Hall sensor and 2 relays in the windscreen.

7> area above the rear seats and where the roof sits into.

8> boot lid, rear quarter panals, rear quearter panel covers

9> add to that an engineers report, the parts and someone to do the job.

Get a proper cab, you will enjoy a scuttle shake free drive, you will not be driving around in a bastartised car, and MOST important of all it will be SAFE

HTH

I have the dream of having lotīs of money to buy a 944 just to cut it and make a retractible roof like the mercedes SLK...not electrical, but at least manual...it doesnīt seem too complicated!

But perhaps if i had the money i should buy an SLK... :)

I agree with adrian on this one, a convertible body is VERY different when dealing with monocoque(sp?) construction. Simply chopping a 944 will give you a body that flexes all over the place when you want to turn....your roof is an important structural element! That's why convertibles generally weigh more than coupes, all of the extra chassis support to keep your body from twisting apart.

if you could find a non sunroof one its easy to put a sunroof in, not one that retracts into the car but the spoiler kind is a piece o cake.
