My '86 944 has an issue with its charging system: when I turn the car on (not started) all warning lights come on except the low-voltage warning light. When I start the car, the voltage gauge reads 12V, and remains there until I rev it to around 2500 RPM, at which time the meter jumps to the expected 14V (or thereabout.)
I spoke to my local mechanic, who said that the warning light is part of the circuit of the charging system, and if it burns out the system will exhibit the behavior indicated. Tonight, I tore out my instrument panel, and found that one of the leads to the warning light had been stripped off of the circuit board and cut. I soldered the lead back together, and tested the warning light at the contacts - it worked. So I put everything back together, turned the car on, but still had no warning light, and no charging until I revved the car. Does anybody have any ideas on this one? Why would someone cut the lead to the warning light? What should I check next? I'm not too worried about the warning light, but I'd like the system to start charging w/o having to rev it. Thanks in advance. |

Mine does exactly the same thing. Mine is confirmed by the voltmeter. Sounds normal to me. My 911 does the same thing.

Change the regulator. Get one you can adjust to 14.4 volts.
Clean all your battery connections including the grounds to the chassis and engine block.

Hey, symptoms sound familiar. Just got a 924S,
the alternator does not charge at all, until you rev it to about 4000, then it pops in and works completely okay until you turn the car off and have to do it again. I checked the bulb, it is okay, and the wires in the vicinity are okay. The blue wire to the gauge is the one that's important I believe. Anybody know where it goes from the instrument cluster? I think my charging would be fixed if I could find where it goes and how it gets to the diode and then to +12V. Thanks, Mark S. '70 914-6 '87 924S |
