Front wheel clunking while turning
 

while i was backing up a few weeks back, and i've also noticed this other times, lately, is a clunking noise while backing up and turned all the way to the right (or left, i think). it knocks, like once or twice, but isn't a constant noise.

what is this?
anyone experienced this before?

if i need to explain in better detail, tell me.

More than likely the CV's, one of them anyways. Try and reproduce the noise with someone else to isolate it.

Check your sway bar bushings. Most likely the bushing on the A arm is shot and the sway bar is loose causing the knock. Sman

I agree with the CV theory. Sounds like you may need to repack the grease as it may have hardend over time.

I had a similar noise as you've described - my symptoms disappeared after I replaced my wheel bearings (not the source of the noise) and I took the opportunity to repack my Cvs at the same time. No re-occurance of the clunking thus far.

May also be your handbrake mechanism - not properly releasing somewhere in the shoe / spring area.

FRONT WHEEL....CV's are in the rear....Could also be the strut bearing..............Sman

Mmm. My bad - I was focusing on the noise in my head. :)

Still ... often difficult to pinpoint where noise is coming from - I may have made a valid point by accident.

I'm assuming the 924 wheels bearings are adjustable in the same manner as the 944. Worth jacking her up and examining the wheel for freeplay etc.

Yes the wheel bearings are the same and a good suggestion! Lift the car and check the wheel for any wobble. But I will wager 100 bucks it is the sway bar though!

Is the sway bar the same as the stabilizer bar? The large bow-like bar connected to the swinging arms? I've found the rubber mountings on these particularly prone (esp the right hand side) to breakdown from oil leaks from the engine (spillage from clumsy oil filling too) and power steering reservoir.

Dark Skies....You have it! Yes the sway bar bushing on the right side is prone to destruct due to the PS fluid that will leak and cascade to the bushing. Rubber and oil do not go well together. The PS hose is most likely leaking as it is known to do. There is a PS hose update kit that helps stop the fluid leak. If his PS canister is oily you can bet it ruined the rubber bushing on the A arm. Sman
