Post I hit 60 mph

I hit about 62 mph in 2nd gear last night, and only doing about 5600 rpm, is this good or bad? I know my speedo is right on too,had it checked.

If everything is correct, you should not be able to hit 60 mph with the stock set up (wheels, tires, gears, etc.) without exceeding the 6,400 rpm redline. I think 56 mph is redline in 2nd gear.

If you're speedois reading 62 mph at only 5,600 rpm in 2nd gear, and your car is stock, then your speedo is reading high.

Gee, I can only get to about 4,700 rpm and my engine starts to chock and cut out . Letting off the throttle brings me back to even running, but I just can't get past 4,700 rpm. I have ruled out the following:
fuel pump, fuel filter, ignition coil, fuel pump regulator, my injectors are functioning and show appropriate resistance, throttle position switch, 02 sensor.
Can someone advise the correct procedure on diagnosing the DME (my worst fears). Or has anyone shared the same symptoms / fixes? This cars runs exceptionally smooth at idle and through the range upto 4,700 rpm. It gets good gas mileage (~26-28 mpg). It's driving my nuts cause I know this car can and should perform at high end.
Thx,
Scott

How do you know the tachometer is correct? How fast are you going when that occurs?

You should have to shift right before 60 unless you over rev it, thats one of the reasons the 0-60 times are so high for the 944.

What model 944 and what tranny are you talking about, cuase I swear that I can drop mine into 2nd at 60 and its at like 4500 or so RPM and I usually use that to pass on slower roads. 86 Turbo 5sp.

Don't Turbos have longer gearing, (though I'm not sure it's that long!)

My guess is that you have the low profile 225/50 15 tires on your car which tricks your speedometer to read high. If you have stock 215/60 15s, then your speedometer or tachometer are inaccurate. 944NAs can't better 56 mph (no matter how much hp) due to gearing. 951s are geared different so they can exceed 60 mph in 2nd gear.

The 951 has a lot taller gearing. I have a na 944 daily driver and an '86 951. The gearing is a lot taller in the 951. The owners manual has specs on the gearing in both turbo and NA.

Hmmmmmm, I think I will try to hook a different tach up and see if there is a difference, I know the speedo is right on , because I had a freind right beside me going 60 and his said the same thing, he's got a 2001 s-10. Any ideas how I could hook this "other" tach up? I,m runing 215/60 15 all the way around. I will try this again and see if I just read it wrong.......thats always possiable.(sp)

I hit 70 (indicated ) in 2nd, but at 6250 rpm. Since I have no exhaust from the cat back, It sounded pretty cool, so do those 4200 rpm downshifts into third. Unfortunatley I will be putting the exhaust back on.

also, some dme's up the redline by about 500rpms letting you just barely hit 60 in second gear, so that helps the 0-60 time. Do you have an upgraded dme?

Actually there was a post about my DME box a few weeks ago. Yes, It is upgraded and you are right about the upped rev limit.

I hit 60 in second gear today, had to rev to about 7100-7200 rpm, which is a bout 300-400 rpm over redline in an 944S. My speedo is radar verified.

I hit 74 and that is with a chipped 951 pushing it to the limit. Today the law had a radar sign setup to show your speed as you go buy and I held it right on the 50 mark as I passed buy and it indicated I was dead on 50.
