can i put a dme from a later 944 and put it on an early 944,like an 84, and that way i can put a chip in it. would this work fine or would the car run like crap because its a later dme?

It will run like crap - later ones rely on a MAF sensor and 3 wire O2; earlier ones rely on Airflow door (AFM) and single lead O2 sensor. I have seen mods to older DME's that will allow MAFs $$.

not true, i run an 86 dme in my 83. it runs perfectly. it also has an autothority chip in it. i got it at hershey swap meet,didnt check the part numbers and installed it. two years later i removed it to do the speedo cable,and noticed it was different. it does work.

If any one needs 86 turbo stock DME and KLR chips, let me know...
