i posted a while back about other 944's and was wondering if 968's were worthwhile cars or do they break too much or is there some flaw with them that is consistent. just give me all the dirt you know about this car. thanks

A 968 is just a very nice 944 for the most part. Many of the common parts are interchangable (like water pump, starter) but there are also plenty of differences. The 968 because it's newer is much more expensive to own and fix at times. Some parts are available only thru porsche and that makes them pricey. It's a much more powerful engine, 236 hp outta the larger bore, same stroke, 3 liter engine. Not only is it 16 valve but has variable valve timing on the intake side also. You can get these engines to around 250 hp quite easily, but after than it becomes very expensive to upgrade, but turbo's done right on them can produce over 400 hp and 0-60 times around 4.5sec. Factory cars are 0-60 just over 6.0 and top end out in the low 160's with the 6 speed tranny. The brakes and suspension are both upgraded in the 968 over what the standard 944 had, it's more like what the turbo's were equipped with. They did make a very few factory 968 turbo's, but I do not believe any were federalized and none were brought into the US which would make all of them illegal here. Basically the same kind of great car, still have to deal with the timing belt issue, still have expensive clutch jobs... but it comes from the factory the way most want them anyway.. fat tires n rims, great brakes, faster n most and a total blast to drive... I say go for a convertible!!!!!

Try this link:
www.968.net Lots of info. In my opinion, the 968 is a wonderful car... the last version (for want of a better word) of the 924/944 family. But, it is fairly rare, which means that used 968's are still pretty expensive. On the other hand 944's were made in much greater numbers, and so there are still many of them around (both Turbos and non). If you want out and out speed/power per dollar the 944 turbo is hard to beat for value compared to the 968 or almost any other car, for that matter. -MAS |
